Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers Analysis

The Los Angeles Dodgers travel to Coors Field to play the Colorado Rockies in the first of a three game series. The Rox come off a 1-5 road trip against Miami and Minnesota, and the Dodgers are 5-1 in their roadie against the Reds and Braves

Southpaw Tyler Anderson takes the hill for the Dodgers against Rockies right-hander Chad Kuhl. The Dodgers are a -195 road favorite, the Rockies a home +175 dog, and the run total is 11.5.

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

The Dodgers are playing the kind of baseball I thought they would before the season. They lead the NL West with a 45-26 record, ahead of the 2nd place Padres by two games. Even without Mookie Betts, Trea Turner and Freddie Freeman have improved at the plate and filled in the gap.

LA ranks first in MLB in runs scored per nine innings, OPS and are sixth in team batting average, and have five starters hitting over .300. The bullpen is still solid with an 8th lowest ERA at 3.34 with a 1.14 WHIP.

Starter Tyler Anderson is another former Rockies player who’s found success with another team. He has an 8-0 record, a 3.00 ERA for the year with 65 strikeouts in 72.0 innings.

Control has been solid as he’s given up just seven home runs and 12 walks. The only challenge is that he faces a Rockies team in Coors Field that’s 3rd against southpaws in OPS.

If Anderson can avoid giving up the long ball, he should have a successful start against a Rockies team that doesn’t have the home run power it’s had in prior years.

The Dodgers also have the highest OPS against right handed pitchers at .772 with a team batting average of .257, and 1st in team hitting with a .758 OPS and tied for 10th in home runs with Arizona at 86, and 4th in stolen bases at 50.

Steals aren’t as sexy a stat as home runs, but it shows the Dodgers won’t just rest on their laurels to wait for a big hit or big inning.

Colorado Rockies Betting Preview

The Rockies have had a reputation over the years as a team that can put up a lot of runs and hit balls out of the yard. However, the 2022 version of this team hasn’t lived up to that billing.

They have a 19th best OPS at .721 with a 2nd best batting average of .259, but are only 23rd in home runs with 65. Cron and Blackmon are their leading long fly hitters with 17 and 12, and no one else on the roster has more than seven.

The pitching staff… well, they’re not good. They have a 27th best ERA of 4.93 with a 1.44 WHIP, and the bullpen has the 2nd highest ERA in baseball.

Senzatela and Marquez have had some good recent starts, but it looks like they’ve lost their best reliever, Tyler Kinley for the season with an injury – and Tommy John surgery hasn’t been ruled out.

Chad Kuhl isn’t a pitcher with overpowering strikeout stuff, but he’s posted pretty good numbers for the year. He’s 4-5 with a 3.95 ERA in 13 starts and 68.1 innings with 52 strikeouts.

A sub-4.00 ERA pitching half your games in Coors Field is a stat to tip your hat to. He’s only given up seven home runs but has had a problem with walks, issuing 29 free passes this season. That comes to about four walks per nine innings, not optimal for a major league pitcher.

Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction

The Dodgers are coming off playing Atlanta in the Sunday night game, and the Rockies got back from Minnesota yesterday, so the home team has a slight edge when it comes to travel and rest.

LA is 4-0 in their last four road games against a right-handed starter, while the Rox are 0-4 in Kuhl’s last four starts against a team with a winning record.

The visitors are playing really good baseball and the Rockies are struggling, so I’ll go ahead and take the Dodgers on the run line.

Prediction: Dodgers Run Line (-1.5)
