Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates Analysis

On Monday night, the Cubs and the Pirates face off for the first game of a two-game series in Chicago. The Pirates are coming off a 2-1 series loss against the Marlins at home and the Cubs are coming off a three-game sweep of the Phillies in Philly.

The Pirates lead the season series against the Cubs 8-5. For this matchup, the Cubs are -145 home favorites, the run line is 1.5, and the total is set at 8.5 runs.

Brubaker Desperate For Wins

With the All-Star break in the rearview, the Pirates enter the second half of the season with a 40-56 record and they sit in third place in the NL Central.

The Pirates are 1-2 since the All-Star game and they are 4-6 in their last 10 games. On the road this season, the Pirates are 19-31 and they are 43-39 against the spread as an underdog this year.

JT Brubaker will make the start for the Pirates tonight at Wrigley. Brubaker is 2-8 on the season with a 4.02 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, and a 3.74 FIP. This will be Brubakers’ fourth time facing the Cubs this season, and each start he has had vs Chicago has been better than the last.

On 6/20, Brubaker pitched against the Cubs in Pittsburgh, and he allowed no runs on five hits over six innings in a Pirates win. In his last three starts, Brubaker has allowed seven runs on 15 hits over 18 innings of work.

On the road this year, Brubaker has a 3.79 ERA, a .360 slugging percentage against, a 3.16 FIP, and a 1.39 WHIP. The Pirates are 0-5 in his last five road starts, but the Pirates are 3-2 covering the run line.

Cubs Bats Catching Fire

The Cubs are 3-0 since the All-Star Break and they are on a four-game winning streak. Before the All-Star Break, the Cubs were struggling, and they are just 4-6 in their last 10 games.

Chicago is 38-57 and they sit in fourth place in the NL Central. The Cubs are 18-32 at home and they are 7-17 covering the run line as a favorite this season.

Adrian Sampson will make the start for the Cubs tonight at home against the Pirates. In five starts this season, Sampson is 0-1 with a 3.34 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and a 3.65 FIP.

In his last three starts, Sampson has allowed six runs on 16 hits over 16.1 innings of work. In 21.2 innings at home this season, Sampson has a 3.74 ERA, a .375 slugging percentage against, a 3.96 FIP, and a 1.34 WHIP.

Eric Pauly MLB Picks

Chicago Cubs vs Pittsburgh Pirates Prediction

Looking at this matchup, I am not sure why the Cubs are such big favorites. The Pirates struggle to win games Brubaker starts, but he has been a much better pitcher as the season has gone on. The Cubs are hot now, but I believe their four-game winning streak ends tonight.

Prediction: Pittsburgh Pirates Moneyline +122
