Detroit Tigers at New York Mets NRFI (-135)

The New York Mets offense has been struggling in the first inning so far this season. The Mets are averaging a league-low .36 runs per game in the first inning to start the season. Last season, with more or less the same lineup, the Mets were 10th in the MLB in NRFIs, with a hit rate north of 50%.

The Tigers are 21st in the MLB this year in the first inning, scoring .47 runs per game in the first frame. The Tigers had a massive scoring outbreak against the White Sox, which boosted this number tremendously. Last season, Detroit was the 5th best NRFI team in the MLB, as they did not score a run in the first in 87 of the 162 games.

Sean Manaea, the Mets starter, posted his best numbers the first time through the order last year. He kept his FIP down at 3.06, and his batting average on balls in play was .263. Reese Olson, the Tigers starter, kept the opponent’s batting averages down to .211 the first time through the order, and his FIP was 3.20.

Neither of these teams has scary tops of the lineup, so we expect on a cold, rainy night neither team to cross home plate in the first inning on Monday night.

Cleveland Guardians at Seattle Mariners NRFI (-115)

The Cleveland Guardian’s offense is one of the weak spots on the team, and we do not expect them to cross the dish in the first tonight. Cleveland averaged just .43 runs in the first inning in their opening series against the lowly Athletics, so it’s easy to see this lineup struggling tonight against a tougher level of competition.

The Mariners did a much better job crossing the plate in the first, and they have a much better lineup than the A’s, but this team is not mashing top to bottom. Seattle struggled with scoring runs early last season, and so far, it seems like they are having the same kind of lull to start the season.

Emerson Hancock, a young pitcher, was great the first time through a lineup in limited action last season. He has a 1.23 ERA, a .208 batting average against, and a 3.26 FIP. Triston McKenzie, the Guardian’s starter, has issues with walks, but when he is on, he is one of the best young pitchers in the MLB.

This combo of good pitching and mediocre offense makes this one of the best NFRI bets to make today.
