2022 MLB All-Star Game Analysis

The 2022 MLB All-Star game comes to us from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The American League have won eight straight games heading into this won after the National League had won three straight from 2010-2012.

The National League in total has only won six all-star games since 1988! Let’s look at some betting angles we can look at heading into this one as approximately 20% of the rosters have been altered since the initial announcement of all-stars on July 6th and 8th.

American League Aims For Nine Straight

First let’s look at players who were selected but won’t play in the game. This list includes Mike Trout, Jose Altuve, George Springer, Yordan Alvarez, Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole.

This is a big blow to the roster as all of these players would’ve proven great value had they chosen to play. Their replacements are Santiago Espinal, Corey Seager, J.D. Martinez, Liam Hendricks and Jordan Romano.

Their pitching takes the biggest blow as Hendriks missed almost a month this season. Romano sports a 5.65 road ERA on the season so bringing him late against the National League’s best could be risky.

The American League will start Rays ace Shane McClanahan and will likely use Shohei Ohtani, Alex Manoah and Nestor Cortes to follow.

If the American League is up near the end I expect Astros manager Dusty Baker to use Hendriks and Guardians closer Emmanuel Close with Yankees closer Clay Holmes getting the save chance.

Fire power off the bench for the American League includes home run derby participants Jose Ramirez, Corey Seager and runner-up, rookie Julio Rodriguez. As we know in the all-star game, the starting line up and pitcher don’t last long into a game so the reserves play a bigger role than most think.

National League Needs To Save Face

The National League took less of a blow to their positional players but will still be without Jazz Chisholm Jr., Bryce Harper, Nolan Arenado and Starling Marte. They were able to get better replacements in the hitting department with those players being replaced by Freddie Freeman, Austin Riley and Jake Cronenworth.

Some might argue the National League took the bigger blow in the pitching department being without reigning NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes, Max Fried and Carlos Rondon. They were replaced by Tyler Anderson, Miles Mikolas and Devin Williams.

Where the National League will run into problems is late in the game if manager Brian Snitker chooses to roll with relief pitchers innings 7-9.

Sure the National League relievers have stellar numbers but most of these guys haven’t played on a stage like this aside from Edwin Diaz. Other National League Relievers include the Pirates David Bednar, Diamondbacks Joe Mantiply, Cardinals Ryan Helsley and the already mentioned Williams.

It’s great to see the Contreras brothers in the National League starting hitting right next to one another and this team definitely has the power advantage after the starting line up goes out with power hitters like Home Run Derby winner Juan Soto, Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonso, C.J. Cron and others coming off the bench.

2022 MLB All-Star Game Prediction

I’m sure it’s been a broken record for years on how poorly the National League performs in all-star games. Now that the game doesn’t determine home field advantage in the World Series there’s really no incentive for either team to win.

I think the various personalities on the National League will prompt the team overall to gun for this win. Look for the National League power hitters off the bench to make an impact later in the game. This game will be tight as usual so I’d stay away from the run line but let’s roll with the National League to win a tight one 6-5.

Prediction: National League Moneyline -111
