Who is Derma Sotogake?

Derma Sotogake is a three-year-old chestnut colt who was bred in Japan by Shadai Farm and purchased for 19.8 million yen (about $163,000) at the 2021 JRHA Yearling and Foal Sale1. He is owned by Hiroyuki Osanuma and trained by Hidetaka Otonashi.

He is sired by Mind Your Biscuits, a multiple Grade 1-winning US dirt sprinter, and out of Amour Poesie, a stakes-winning mare who also produced Grade 3 winner Million Disk1. Derma Sotogake means “skin sprint” in Japanese, which reflects his sire’s name and his speed on the track.

Who is Derma Sotogake? What is Derma Sotogake’s racing profile and history?

Derma Sotogake started his career on turf, but he did not show much promise in his first two races. He switched to dirt in his third start and showed improvement, finishing third. He then went on to win his next three races, including two stakes races in Japan. One of them was the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun, the second race in the Japanese Road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby series. He earned 10 points for that victory, which qualified him for the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan on March 25.

The UAE Derby was Derma Sotogake’s first international race and his first time racing over 1 3/16 miles. He faced a strong field of 14 horses from seven countries, but he dominated them with a wire-to-wire performance that saw him win by 5 1/2 lengths in a fast time of 1:55.811. He earned 100 points for that win, which secured him a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.

He also became the first Japanese horse to win the UAE Derby and the second horse to win both the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun and the UAE Derby after Lani in 20161.

Derma Sotogake arrived at Churchill Downs on April 18 after traveling more than 6,000 miles from Japan. He has been working well on the track under the guidance of Kate Hunter, the Churchill Downs Japan Coordinator who helps the Japanese team with logistics, paperwork, and cultural adjustments.

He breezed five furlongs in 1:01.80 on April 26 and six furlongs in 1:13.20 on May 13. His trainer Otonashi said he is happy with his condition and confident in his ability.

What are Derma Sotogake’s strengths and weaknesses?

Derma Sotogake has several strengths that make him a serious contender for the Kentucky Derby. He has proven himself on dirt, which is not always easy for Japanese horses who are mostly bred for turf. He has shown versatility in running styles, as he can set or stalk the pace depending on the situation.

He has displayed stamina and speed, as he can handle distances up to 1 3/16 miles and run fast fractions throughout. He has also shown adaptability and professionalism, as he can handle different tracks, climates, and environments without any issues.

However, Derma Sotogake also has some weaknesses that could hinder his chances of winning. He has never raced against US horses before, which means he will face a different level of competition and style of racing than he is used to. He has never raced at Churchill Downs before, which means he will have to deal with a new surface, configuration, and atmosphere than he is used to. He has never raced with more than 14 horses before, which means he could struggle.

What are Derma Sotogake’s current odds?

Derma Sotogake is currently the fourth favorite in the latest Kentucky Derby odds, with 10-1 odds to win the race1. He is behind Forte (5-2), Tapit Trice (6-1), and Angel of Empire (8-1), who are the top three choices according to the oddsmakers.

Derma Sotogake’s odds reflect his impressive performance in the UAE Derby, as well as his potential to handle the distance and the dirt at Churchill Downs. However, his odds also reflect his lack of experience against US horses, as well as his unfamiliarity with the track and the crowd.

What is the origin of Derma Sotogake’s name?

Derma Sotogake’s name is a combination of two words: derma and sotogake. Derma is a prefix that means skin or related to skin, which is a reference to his sire Mind Your Biscuits, who was named after a skin care product.

Sotogake is a Japanese word that means sprint or dash, which is a reference to his speed and running style on the track. Together, Derma Sotogake means “skin sprint” or “skin dash”, which is a unique and catchy name for a horse.

What are Derma Sotogake’s chances of winning the Kentucky Derby?

Derma Sotogake has a realistic chance of winning the Kentucky Derby, as he has shown all the qualities of a champion: talent, versatility, stamina, speed, adaptability, and professionalism. He has also proven himself on the international stage by winning the UAE Derby in dominant fashion.

He has a good post position (No. 2), a good jockey (Christophe Lemaire), and a good team behind him (Kate Hunter and Hidetaka Otonashi). He will face some tough competition from Forte, Tapit Trice, Angel of Empire, and others, but he has the potential to overcome them and make history for Japan.

Derma Sotogake is not just a horse, he is a dream. He is a dream for his owner Hiroyuki Osanuma, who bought him for a modest price and saw him become a star. He is a dream for his trainer Hidetaka Otonashi, who prepared him for the biggest race of his life.

He is a dream for his jockey Christophe Lemaire, who rode him to glory in Dubai and hopes to repeat it in Louisville.

He is a dream for his fans in Japan and around the world, who cheer for him and wish him well. He is a dream for himself, who wants to show everyone what he can do.

On May 6, Derma Sotogake will try to turn his dream into reality. He will try to win the Kentucky Derby 2023 and become the first Japanese horse to do so. He will try to make history and create a legacy. He will try to be the best horse in the world.
