In 2020, No ACC team was impacted more by COVID than Virginia Tech.  Justin Fuente went 29-22 in conference play, which is decent, and 48-32 overall. 

I said in this spot a year ago that Virginia Tech still fancies itself as a leader in the ACC.  Brent Pry was 3-8 in his initial season, and 1-6 in the ACC.  How does this program get back to where they used to be?

Brent Pry had the profile of a coach that could keep the defense performing at a decent level. 

The stat sheet seemed to confirm this 2022 assessment, but in the ACC the Hokies allowed 190 points in seven games.  Part of the issue was an offense that went from 4.85-193 in the run game down to 3.5-120, which was coupled with mediocre QB play from transfer Grant Wells. 

Wells returns, and he’ll be working with a bunch of transfer WR’s and some changes in the RB unit.  A transfer RB from North Carolina AT&T is on my September watch list.  The OL allowed 33 sacks (11 games) in 2022.  Can that improve?  Virginia has been a special team leader for the past two decades.  The new staff last year regressed to the middle of the pack.  Let’s chart this area as well.

Virginia Tech 2023 Predictions, Virginia Tech Schedule: How Hard is the Schedule?

Games 2-4 are home to Purdue, at Rutgers and at Marshall (where QB Wells used to play).  These are all winnable games, but only if we see offensive improvement. 

With an “expected” win in a revenge game vs. ODU, 3-1 heading into ACC play is the goal.  Can Virginia Tech surprise Pitt when they host the Panthers on 9/30?  I’m not ruling it out, but I’ll pre-check Wells and the OL vs. Pitt’s pressure defense. 

Games 7-8 are at home vs. Wake and Syracuse. 

Virginia Tehc did not play these two in 2022 with the new staff.  Games 9-10 are on the road vs. Louisville and their new staff and Boston College. 

Why can’t these four games result in at least a split?  VT went 1-4 on the road in Pry’s initial go-around.  The final two games are home vs. NC State and at Virginia.  What’s NC State’s mindset coming into this game?  VT has an amazing history vs. Virginia.  I expect that game to be close.

Virginia Tech Football Bottom Line: Total Wins Future Pick

Last year I felt their win total of 7.5 was way too high. 

The predominant win figure right now is 5.  It could be a rocky start, but I’m open-minded about the finish, as I think Pry could give them some hope.  They lost three games by a total of five points, and two of those games should have been in the victory column.  This is all about the offense, primarily QB play, plus the overall sack ratio.  6-6 and a bowl berth is should be a reasonable goal for this team.

Virginia Tech Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I’m curious as to how fast visiting Purdue adjusts to their new staff.  I’m leaning Virginia Tech, but if I don’t see team progress in games 1-2, I might go into fade mode after that.  I’m not looking to force a play with Virginia Tech, so for now I’ll stay quiet, with a lean dog late in the season..
