Auburn Football Predictions: Strengths, Weaknesses, Improvements, Declines

The highly diverse QB battle. The incumbent (Ashford) is a dynamic runner who has near zero accuracy. Transfer Thorne (Mich St) has accuracy but is not a runner.

Decent coordinator Montgomery (from Tulsa) will have to put two different schemes in place. There’s great stability at WR, while the OL will feature plenty of competition (less experienced). Ron Roberts had more good years than bad as a defensive coordinator.

Auburn returns 11 of their top 14 tacklers and I project better numbers (4.3 run D, 5.0 a year ago) and 56% on the pass D. Improving on a -11 turnover ratio is highly likely. A flat (zero) ratio could add a win or two to the bottom line.

Auburn Football Schedule: Which Games Will They Win?

Auburn has a typical SEC non-conference schedule, which means it’s mostly a joke. The game 9/9 at Cal is the tough one. Has Texas A&M improved?

I’ll chart their offense vs. Auburn’s defense prior to this critical meeting. Can Auburn give LSU at least a scare on 10/14 at their place?

Auburn will be rested, which gives this staff an important opportunity to make some early scheme and personnel adjustments. Conversely, Ole Miss will be rested when they come to Auburn on 10/21.

Auburn has a great host history in this series. The Tigers have double revenge vs. Miss St. and might be happy that they won’t face a Mike Leach offense.

Which team is playing better in ’23? The goal in November is 3-1, which would require a win at Vandy plus one upset, either at Arkansas (could be a 50-50 game) or home in the Iron Bowl to Alabama.

Auburn Football Bottom Line: Total Wins Expected Expert Pick

Maybe a 3-4 start, but unfortunately (as I have a play under 7) a finish that gets them to 7-5. The schedule is clearly manageable.

It will be fascinating to see who starts at QB, and how the offense unfolds. Hopefully my pre-checks will prepare me for whatever transpires.

Auburn Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I will tentatively look vs. when not a rush pick, but with the early bye, will need to note any radical adjustments made by them.

I’m hoping to fade them at Cal, but if the defense holds its own, I might be backing them as a dog at various times in SEC play. Keeping an open mind on their possible outcomes is of the upmost importance.
