Wyoming vs Boise State Analysis

A lot has happened since the last time Boise State lost a game on November 30. Those in the Mountain Time Zone and elsewhere who keep expecting the Broncos to slip have been sadly disappointed in recent weeks as likeable Leon Rice and his troops simply keep on winning, now 14 in a row (and 9-3 vs. line last 12).

Along the way, Boise has featured smothering defense (58.3 points per game allowed ranks sixth nationally) and fierce rebounding (+6.5 rebound margin is best in Mountain West), suggesting all of these wins are no accident.

Let’s Run it Back

One of those wins came at the expense of Wyoming last Tuesday at ExtraMile Arena. That one came down to the wire with Boise surviving by three, when it was F Agu Kibab’s turn to lead the well-balanced offense (he scored 18). But Marcus Shaver, Jr. and Emmanuel Akot can shoot a lot better than their combined 4 for 15 from that night. And as close as the first meeting turned out to be, we think the matchups still look for the Broncos, with enough size and length on the perimeter to slow down Wyoming senior G Hunter Maldonado, who’s scored 30+ in the last two vs. Air Force and in the pulsating OT win on Monday vs. Colorado State.

Wyoming vs Boise State Stat Log

Backing the Broncos

Boise State plays at one of the slowest paces in the country and it’s no surprise that the under is 14-6 in Boise’s games this season. The Broncos were involved in one of the season’s lowest-scoring games, 42-37 vs San Diego State, two weeks ago.

The Broncos utilize their top-five adjusted defensive efficiency to make up for their lack of offense including their dreadful free throw shooting, where they rank in the bottom of the country at 60-percent.

Cowboys on the Run

The Cowboys’ three losses overall are to Boise State, Stanford and Arizona so they’ve done a great job winning the games they’re supposed to. They’ve done this by being one of the most efficient teams on offense in the country with one of the tallest teams (No. 7 in height according to KenPom).

Sophomore forward Graham Ike is averaging over 19 ppg and 8 rpg while shooting over 53% from the field. Hunter Maldonado averages over 19 ppg, 5 rpg and 6 apg while shooting over 51%. These two will have to play their best game to pull off the win against Boise State. If Wyoming can push the pace more than the Broncos are used to, we may see the Mountain West leader’s first conference loss.
