North Carolina vs Miami FL Analysis
Another exciting ACC match-up tips off Tuesday night in the Watsco Center as the Hurricanes of Miami host the Tar Heels of North Carolina. In a battle for the top spot in the conference, with North Carolina a haƒlf game behind Miami currently. The Hurricane’s win streak ended in their one point loss to Florida State last Tuesday, and now they look to start a new streak on their home court.
Miami Surprising the ACC
Miami comes into this game looking to protect a 5-1 record in the ACC and an 8-1 record on their home court this season. Miami has been an impressive team this year, especially when you consider the fact that their offense is a top-20 unit, and putting up almost 85 PPG on their home court. Miami is allowing 78.6 PPG in the last five, and just 78 PPG against the ACC, which isn’t a horrible number when you take into consideration the offensive units they have played in the conference. They have played 10 teams that rank in the top-100 in offensive efficiency, including Florida State (#88), Duke (#10), Syracuse (#19), Wake Forest (#53), NC State (#42) & Clemson (#47), which are all conference opponents.
They have allowed 79.3 PPG against offensive units that rank in the top-100 and they have won five of the last six of those match-ups (while covering six of the last seven). Miami has also played 10 teams that rank in the top-100 in defensive efficiency, and they are posting just under 73 points against those teams, but they have won three out of the four match-ups against ACC teams (and covered all four), with wins against Clemson, Wake Forest, and Duke, and the only loss coming in their last game against Florida State by just a single point. Miami is 17-7 against the spread as an underdog in the last two years, but they have posted a record of 2-10 against the spread after they won three of their last four games.
Three Point Shooting Carries Tar Heels
North Carolina comes into this game with just one conference loss so far, a five point loss to Notre Dame, but winning four of their last five games overall. North Carolina is a top-15 team on the offensive side of the ball and that really could be the difference in this game. Miami holds the 3rd worst defense that North Carolina has played this year in terms of defensive efficiency. Yet Miami does possess the 3rd best offense that North Carolina has played this season. While their record against the ACC looks very similar to Miami, North Carolina has only played six teams that hold an offense in the top-100, with Notre Dame being the only opponent in the ACC to hold such a ranking.
They have taken on two of the best offenses in the country in Kentucky and Purdue, but North Carolina lost both of those games by an average of 19 PPG (and failing to cover the spread by an average of 13.75 PPG). All four of North Carolina’s losses this season have come to teams that rank in the top-100 offensively, they hold a record of 2-4 against these units, with the only two wins coming against Michigan and Furman. North Carolina has relied on their 3pt shooting, they rank #6 in the country in 3pt percentage, and they are shooting over 40% from beyond the arc on the road this season, although they are allowing over 81 PPG on the road this season.
North Carolina vs Miami FL Prediction
North Carolina holds the lead in the head-to-head match-ups against Miami (FL), winning 22 out of 30 games dating back to 1997, including a 9-3 record on Miami’s court. Although, North Carolina is just 6-17 against the spread after two or more consecutive wins in the last three seasons. We saw what this Miami Hurricanes team can do, as a 15 points underdog when they took down then ranked, #6 Duke Blue Devils. One thing is for certain, these teams know how to score, and these teams know how to perform in high pressure situations. Miami has gone over the total in seven out of nine games at home, while North Carolina has gone over the total in six out of seven games on the road.
Opinion: I find myself leaning slightly towards Miami (+2.5) with the way Miami has played against the ACC and in their recent games in general, but the OVER seems to be the way to go with the way these teams play home & away respectively.
