LSU vs Florida Analysis
The Southeastern Conference basketball matchups have been nothing short of heart-pounding action this season. Two ranked teams from one of the top college sports conferences in North America are in Gainsville, featuring No. 12 LSU and No. 20 Florida. The SEC showdown pits the Tigers team that is a perfect 2-0 in league play against a home team desperate for a conference win. No. 12 LSU (14-1, 2-1 SEC) has two wins and a loss this season against ranked opponents. No. 20 Florida (9-5, 0-2 SEC) has one victory against the three ranked foes they have played. Las Vegas’ Westgate opened the visiting LSU Tigers as 2.5-point road favorites with a total of 138. At the opening bell in Vegas, sharp money hit the visiting and defensive-heavy Tigers. LSU’s handicap climbed a point, positioning the Tigers at 2.5-point road favorites.
LSU Looks to Stay Consistent
LSU faced ranked teams in each of its first three Southeastern Conference games. The Tigers dropped their conference-opener to arguably the most well-balanced team in all of college basketball in the Auburn Tigers. Following the 70-55 defeat at then-No. 11 Auburn, the Lousiana State troupe earned consecutive home victories against then-No. 16 Kentucky (65-60) and then-No. 18 Tennessee (79-67) this past week. Tari Eason has led the Tigers, averaging 15.1 points and 7.1 rebounds. The sharpshooting Eason has connected on 27.3 percent of the 33 3-pointers he’s attempted. He’s also converted 79.4 percent of his free throws this season. The Tigers defeated a ranked Tennessee Volunteers squad despite losing Xavier Pinson to a knee injury. Pinson was listed as day-to-day.
Castleton Carves Our Role for Florida
Colin Castleton is currently the Florida offense, which is a problem in a uber-good SEC. Castleton averages 15.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks to lead the way for the Gators. The supporting cast for Castleton is Phlandrous Fleming Jr (10.6 points per game). Florida offense shell is thin, and because of the top-heavy roster, it has created defensive liabilities. The Gators are winless, 0-5 this year when the team allows 69 points in a game. The Gators are 9-5 on the season, and the math tells you everything you need to know about this Mike White outfit. Florida is 0-5 when it meets a clan it can’t defend and 9-0 when holding opponents to fewer than 69 points. “I thought we were pretty good,” White said. “I think Auburn would have beaten 99 percent of the teams in college basketball the way they shot the ball. They hit some late-clock daggers, some contested jumpers, some other contested mid-clock (shots), and just executed well.
LSU vs Florida Prediction
Florida has shown the roster overall team talent level on more than one occasion this season but has failed to hold any edge or momentum gained during games. This Florida squad’s lack of quality depth limits them across 40 minutes of play. The Gators trailed by as many as 13 points early against a ranked Auburn squad in Alabama on Saturday, and while Florida closed within one point in the final 10 minutes of the second half, they couldn’t maintain the edge they fought for. “Our offense looked as good as it has in a long time,” coach Wade told the media in the pos-game presser. “We’re capable of that. Tremendous effort all night. I thought we got off to a great start; we got off to a better start to start the second half.”
Pinson is the Tigers’ third-leading scorer (10.9 points per game), and leader in assists (4.7 per game), and his contributions will be missed. However, the matchup against the short-bench of the Gators allows the Tigers to stay perfect in league play and garner an important road victory.
