Tim Tszyu vs Brian Mendoza Betting Analysis

The new WBO super welterweight champion, Tim Tszyu, will make the first defense of his new belt early on Sunday morning over in his native Australia (late night Saturday U.S. time), as he takes on teak-tough Brian Mendoza in Broadbeach.

This will be Tszyu’s third straight fight Down Under after two impressive stoppage victories here across 2023 so far, those coming against Tony Harrison and Carlos Ocampo respectively.

His opponent, Brian Mendoza, is coming off his own KO hot streak, dispatching former unified 154lb champion Jeison Rosario in five rounds late last year before shocking the boxing world with a brutal stoppage of the formerly undefeated Sebastian Fundora in April of this year also.

Tim Tszyu comes into this fight as the -600 favorite, with Brian Mendoza coming back as a +400 underdog ahead of this weekend’s clash.

Contender To Champ

With Jermell Charlo getting stripped of his WBO super welterweight belt immediately after his fight ended against Canelo Alvarez a couple of weeks ago, Tim Tszyu is now THE man in the 154lb division, especially with Charlo’s future still as of yet undetermined.

A lackluster performance against Canelo has led some observers to believe Charlo won’t come back down to 154 to defend his titles, with the highly anticipated bout between himself and Tim Tszyu being a casualty of that decision.

Whether Charlo makes it back down to the weight or not, Tim Tszyu is now a full champion in the division and very much looks like the future given his recent success.

Mendoza Not Here For A Payday

After getting outpointed by one of the future stars of the weight class, Jesus Ramos, back at the end of 2021, it’s been nothing but up for Brian Mendoza.

A stoppage victory over Benjamin Whitaker early last year in which he floored his opponent four times in five rounds, was then followed up by an even bigger stoppage victory against former unified champion Jeison Rosario in November of last year.

Mendoza brutally beat Rosario up in that fight, stopping him in the 5th round with a right uppercut after entering the fight as a +200 underdog.

That was followed up by an even bigger shock earlier this year as the pre-fight +600 Mendoza blasted out the formerly undefeated Sebastian Fundora in just seven rounds to stake his claim as the bogeyman of the 154lb division.

Tim Tszyu vs Brian Mendoza Expert Prediction

This will easily be both fighters’ toughest test to date over their careers so far, with Brian Mendoza’s loss against Jesus Ramos really being the only other fight to come close to this level after Tony Harrison looked a long way from his former prime against Tim Tszyu earlier this year.

Both fighters like to employ pressure in the ring, but Tim Tszyu is the more nuanced of the two, arguably not getting enough credit for his boxing brain in there with most people assuming he’s simply a raw power puncher.

While that’s something he most certainly is also with 17 stoppages across his 23 fights, the way he marries that power with constant feints and angles doesn’t get enough respect, with his constant pressure often breaking down opponents which again should be the difference-maker in this fight come Sunday morning.

Brian Mendoza is as tough as they come, and this should be a real back-and-forth war early, with both fighters being able to trade. However, we’re expecting Tszyu’s greater overall technical ability to start to take over in the middle portion of the fight, and for that then to lead him to start to wear down Mendoza more and more as the fight wears on.

Take Tim Tszyu to get a second-half stoppage early on Sunday morning against Brian Mendoza in his native Australia.

Prediction: Tim Tszyu Rounds 7-12 (+155)
