George Kambosos Jr vs Maxi Hughes Betting Analysis

After losing back-to-back fights against Devin Haney in his home country of Australia in 2022, former unified lightweight title holder George ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos will look to get back to the summit of the division with a comeback win against British lightweight contender Maxi Hughes this weekend over in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Kambosos upset the lightweight title picture massively in 2021 by sensationally dropping and winning a decision against former kingpin Teofimo Lopez before his reign as emperor was cut short by current lightweight undisputed champion Devin Haney.

In terms of his opponent Maxi Hughes, this will be his first real fight on the world stage after outpointing former IBF featherweight champion Kid Galahad in Nottingham last September.

George Kambosos goes in as the substantial -340 favorite for this one with Maxi Hughes coming back as a +265 underdog.

The Emperor Returns

The self-styled Greek Emperor George Kambosos Jr certainly hasn’t shied away from top opponents over the course of his career so far, and that warrior mentality of his is well-earned, fighting Lee Selby, Teofimo Lopez, and Devin Haney all in quick succession across the last three years.

That big fight experience will no doubt serve him well again on Saturday as he looks to get back to the summit of the mountain in the 135 lb division.

Many people are expecting just that also as Haney’s range and jab proved impossible for Kambosos to navigate around as he went on to lose two wide decisions against his former foe, but that’s not going to be the case this weekend against Maxi Hughes.

Hughes doesn’t have the same height or range as Devin Haney does, so Kambosos, along with many other observers, will no doubt favor his unique brand of explosive counter-punching to come out on top on Saturday.

Maximus’ Meteroric Rise

After an 18-month period between 2019 and 2020 in which Maxi Hughes lost two of his three contests to both Sam Bowen and Liam Walsh respectively, it certainly looked as if Maxi Hughes’ career would top out on the domestic stage.

The Sam Bowen stoppage especially stood out as Maxi Hughes was badly beaten up in that fight and was unable to keep Bowen off him as he was eventually broken down and forced to stop via the doctor’s decision late in the eighth round.

Since then however, Maxi Hughes has gone from strength to strength, relying a lot more on his high-level counter-punching ability and piecing together seven impressive victories against the likes of Jono Carroll, Ryan Walsh, and most notably, Kid Galahad as a result.

George Kambosos Jr vs Maxi Hughes Expert Prediction

While ‘Maximus’ vs. ‘The Emperor’ might conjure up images of a ferocious 300-type back-and-forth war between two warriors, that’s highly unlikely to take place here on Saturday as both fighters employ a largely counter-attacking style that relies more on their opponents to force the action in fights.

That forcing will largely have to come from George Kambosos Jr in this fight as well as the British underdog is unlikely to force the action, looking instead to play spoiler and frustrate Kambosos’ work with his sharp counter-punching ability combined with his awkward style.

No doubt Kambosos’ team will already be aware of this however, and with their fighter possessing the faster hands and better combination work of the two, Kambosos will likely have to be forced out of his comfort zone in this fight and look to instigate the action against a fighter in Hughes who will be quite content to bait Kambosos onto traps and look to land that sneaky left hand of his in the process.

This fight could well peter out into a slow tactical type of affair with both men vying for ground in the middle of the ring in a classic counter-punching trade-off between two top-level technicians, a fight that can really only favor the underdog with so many people expecting Kambosos to arrive back on the world stage with a bang on Saturday night.

However, Kambosos does possess the ability to force the action in this one, and if he can let go of some of those sharp combinations of his with regularity in this fight, that should be enough for him to get the decision on Saturday night in what should be a much closer fight than many people anticipate.
