PIT at COL — June 20, 2026
Game time: 9:10 p.m. ET
Venue: Coors Field
Records: Pittsburgh 38-38; Colorado 29-47
Starting pitchers: Paul Skenes vs. Tomoyuki Sugano
Projected first five innings: Pittsburgh 3.4, Colorado 1.4
Starting-pitcher comparison
Pitcher | Team | W-L | ERA | WHIP | IP | K |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Paul Skenes | PIT | 6-6 | 2.85 | 0.93 | 82 | 99 |
Tomoyuki Sugano | COL | 7-4 | 4.54 | 1.34 | 73 1/3 | 41 |
Skenes ranks fifth in MLB in WHIP and enters with 99 strikeouts in 82 innings. His last start produced six innings, two earned runs and ten strikeouts. His road line is approximately a 3.26 ERA with 29 strikeouts and only six walks in 30 1/3 innings.
Sugano’s ERA and WHIP significantly understate his contact risk. His expected ERA is approximately 7.20, with a .403 expected wOBA, 90.8 mph average exit velocity, 45.2% hard-hit rate and 14.5% barrel rate. His latest start produced eight earned runs in five innings.
Pittsburgh is batting .254/.336/.408 with a .744 OPS and has scored 382 runs. Colorado is batting .252/.322/.411 with a .733 OPS and has scored 348 runs. Pittsburgh has the stronger on-base profile, while Colorado’s overall rate statistics remain heavily supported by its home park.
Pittsburgh has been one of MLB’s best offenses against right-handed pitching, carrying an OPS around .766 for the season and approximately .799 over the last month. The Pirates’ last ten games produced 48 runs, a .260/.333/.460 batting line and 17 home runs.
Colorado has also hit right-handed pitching well recently, including a .944 OPS over its last two weeks. That performance includes a 23-run game with 24 hits and six home runs, so the short-term number receives substantial regression rather than being carried directly into the projection.
Pittsburgh’s current lineup lacks Oneil Cruz and Konnor Griffin, reducing speed, power and lineup depth. Ryan O’Hearn, Marcell Ozuna, Brandon Lowe, Bryan Reynolds and Spencer Horwitz still give Pittsburgh a deep group against a contact-oriented right-hander.
Bullpen analysis
Friday’s game did not completely drain either relief corps. Pittsburgh received six innings from Bubba Chandler before Mason Montgomery handled the eighth. Colorado received 7 1/3 innings from Kyle Freeland, followed by Jaden Hill and Antonio Senzatela. Colorado used two of its preferred late-inning options, while Pittsburgh used only one primary reliever.
Bullpen | Last-10-day ERA | Last-10-day WHIP | Projected innings | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Pittsburgh | 3.18 | 1.28 | 3 | Normal |
Colorado | 3.60 | 1.41 | 4 1/3 | Slightly reduced |
Pittsburgh’s relief pitching has improved recently, but a late-inning Coors adjustment remains necessary. Colorado’s bullpen has shown better short-term results than its season ERA, though recent control problems and the expected 4 1/3-inning workload create significant exposure. Colorado relievers issued eight walks during a recent late-game collapse at Wrigley Field.
Projected score boxscore
Period | PIT | COL | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
First five innings | 3.4 | 1.4 | 4.8 |
Innings 6-9 and extras | 2.5 | 2.7 | 5.2 |
Full game | 5.9 | 4.1 | 10.0 |
Projected starting-pitcher boxscore
Pitcher | Team | IP | ER | H | K | BB |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Paul Skenes | PIT | 6 | 1.8 | 4.8 | 7.2 | 1.2 |
Tomoyuki Sugano | COL | 4 2/3 | 3.5 | 6.2 | 2.7 | 1.6 |
Skenes has approximately a 73% probability of completing six innings and a 34% probability of recording an out in the seventh. Sugano has approximately a 48% probability of completing five innings and a 15% probability of completing six.
