THE PLAY: Tampa Bay Buccaneers +2.5 (-103)
3-0 Week 2 - Sean has started off NFL Week 2 on a 3-0 run and has 1 more play for Monday Night Football to finish off the week.
We enter the 3rd year for CJ Stroud in which we saw him take a step back last season, at least state wise he did. There are big expectations around Stroud going into his 3rd year and they are warranted but he has his work cut out for him with the pieces surrounding him on offense. The Texans start off the year missing 2 of their top receivers to injuries, Christian Kirk and Tank Dell, leaving him with just Nico Collins who is working alongside a 2nd year draft pick in Jayden Higgins. The running game is tasked to Nick Chubb who is a solid back, but I doubt his ability to be the main back without much of a change of pace behind him. The Rams do have a solid defense, but 60 yards on 13 carries in Week 1 is not the type of running game that Stroud needs with his lack of receivers. The Rams performance in Week 2 did not add much to the Texans as Los Angeles gave up 109 yards on the ground to a weak Tennessee offense.
Tampa Bay played well in Week 1 to get the win on the road against a tough Falcons team, who played a good Vikings team tough on Sunday night. Baker Mayfield is going to need a better running attack than he saw in Week 1 with 51 yards gained on 16 carries between Irving and White but the Vikings had similar trouble against the Atlanta front with 53 yards on 14 carries. The injury to Chris Godwin is a tough one but Mayfield found rookie Emeka Egbuka 4 times for 67 yards and 2 touchdowns, a nice sign that they have good chemistry this early in the season. Tampa Bay’s defense exceeded my expectations while defending the run in Week 1 and holding Bijan Robinson to 24 yards on 12 carries and watching him bounce-back with 143 yards on 22 carries last night. I expect the run defense to play similar tonight and force Stroud to beat them with his arm.
I like CJ Stroud and expect him to continue improving, but I am not sold on the offensive pieces around him with a huge piece missing in Tank Dell. Missing Chris Godwin is an important factor, but I like that the rookie receiver stepped up last week and I believe this Tampa Bay defense is going to be sneaky good, especially in a matchup they will see tonight. So give me the points with Tampa Bay on the road.
