Samsung Lions at Hanwha Eagles today, September 18 in Daejeon, I like Samsung's matchup considerably more than the raw season hitting numbers initially suggest. But at Samsung -220, the question isn't whether Samsung should be favored—they clearly should be—it's whether they're winning this game more than 68.75% of the time.

My answer is yes, but not by a massive amount. I have Samsung roughly 72–74%, corresponding to approximately -257 to -285 fair odds.

*The season offensive comparison is misleading tonight because Hanwha is missing two of its most important hitters for the Asian Games.

Samsung is 75-50-3 and only 2.5 games behind first-place KT, while Hanwha is 54-69-4 and eighth. Samsung has also been excellent away from home at 37-25-2, whereas Hanwha is only 25-35-3 in Daejeon.

Starting pitching: major Samsung advantage

Ariel Jurado — Samsung

Jurado's 2026 line:

6-1
3.26 ERA
118⅔ IP
1.28 WHIP
77 K / 25 BB
14 quality starts

More importantly, he's pitched very well against Hanwha:

3 starts
19 IP
18 H
3 BB
9 K
5 ER
2.37 ERA
1-0

So this isn't merely a season-stat advantage. The matchup itself has worked for Jurado.

One caution: Jurado hasn't been at his absolute best recently. In September he's around a 4.63 ERA, and his last start against LG was:

6 IP, 9 H, 2 HR, 2 ER.

So I'm not projecting dominant ace-level stuff. I am projecting a much safer run-prevention profile than Hanwha's starter.

Jurado projection: 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 K, roughly 5–7 hits.

Park Jun-young — Hanwha

Park's season numbers are substantially weaker:

2-6
5.74 ERA
42⅓ IP
1.42 WHIP
33 K / 21 BB
10 HR allowed
only 1 quality start

The home-run rate and walk rate are both concerning against Samsung.

There's an important counterargument, though.

Park faced this exact Samsung team on June 19, with Jurado starting opposite him, and pitched quite well:

5 IP
3 H
2 BB
6 K
2 ER

That game finished 3-3, so Samsung certainly didn't destroy him the first time. That's the strongest reason I'd hesitate to treat -220 like an automatic win.

But there is another major concern tonight:

Park's official KBO game log shows no first-team appearances since July 25.

So he's coming back into an important start after a substantial gap. That's much different from a pitcher who has been taking a regular turn every five days.

He also has allowed 10 HR in only 42⅓ innings, including seven to left-handed hitters. That matters against Samsung's left-handed power.

Park projection: 4⅓–5 IP, 3–4 ER, with the HR ball the major risk.

Head-to-head

Samsung has controlled the season series:

Samsung 8-3-1 Hanwha

Huge Asian Games factor

This might be the most important contextual piece of the entire handicap.

Hanwha is without:

Roh Si-hwan
approximately .281 AVG, 27 HR, 90 RBI, .861 OPS

Moon Hyun-bin
approximately .304 AVG, 15 HR, 74 RBI, .858 OPS

Both are with South Korea's Asian Games team. They were in Korea's national-team lineup during Thursday's final tune-up.

That's 42 HR and 164 RBI removed from Hanwha's lineup.

And those aren't replaceable bottom-of-the-order bats. They're two of the central pieces of the offense.

Samsung is also affected. They're without:

Kim Ji-chan
Lee Jae-hyun
reliever Bae Chan-seung

because all three are also on the Asian Games roster.

So it's not a completely one-sided roster situation.

But I'd argue the absences hurt Hanwha's lineup more severely, because Roh and Moon are two of its biggest power/production sources.

Hanwha has shifted toward younger replacements such as Han Ji-yoon, Yoo Min and Park Jeong-hyun while those players are gone. Manager Kim Kyung-moon specifically identified those players as the replacements.

That causes me to discount Hanwha's impressive season offensive numbers.
