THE PLAY: James Madison -23.0 (-112)
James Madison has had an impressive season while dominating conference competition and their only loss of the season coming to Louisville by a 14-point margin. The James Madison offense matches up well against the defense from Troy who cannot stop the run while giving up 4.5 YPC and 171 yards per game on the ground. James Madison is a top running offense who runs for 5.4 yards per carry and 239 yards per game while being led by Wayne Knight who has rushed for 1,051 yards on a 6.2 average and is helped out by quarterback, Alonza Barnett III, who has a 4.5 average on 103 carries. James Madison is rarely forced to throw the ball with how well they operate their run game, but they can stretch the field with their receivers, Landon Ellis and Nick DeGennaro, who have impressive averages of 16.6 and 18.4 on 32 and 21 catches this season. Landon has missed 2 consecutive games with an ankle injury but there were thoughts that he could play last week, but sat out as a precaution, so I am expecting him to play.
Troy is led at quarterback by Goose Crowder who has missed part of the season after injuring his shoulder which required surgery but has made it back to the field and has a solid game last week while completing 24 of 34 passes with 3 touchdowns and an interception. Tae Meadows leads the rushing attack for Troy with a solid 4.5 YPC average but he has had numerous games this season where he was shut down by defenses that are not as strong as the James Madison run defense. The Dukes defense has allowed just 84.7 yards per game on a 2.7 average on the ground and I think that continues in this matchup. While Goose Crowder has come back to the field and played in the previous 3 games, we are still talking about a quarterback who had to have shoulder surgery during the season and will face a stout James Madison defense within the pass game as well. Crowder does have a couple playmaking receivers to spread the ball to in RaRa Thomas and Tray Taylor, but they will face off against 3 of the better cornerbacks within the Sun Belt conference in DJ Barksdale, KJ Flowe, and Justin Eaglin who have limited opposing receivers all season and I expect them to continue that today.
I think James Madison is far superior on both sides of the football and match up well against this Troy team, so I am going to lay the number with James Madison.
