THE PLAY: Daniel Berger Top-20 Finish (+110)
Truist Championship
Top-20 Finish Including Ties
Since the beginning of February, I don’t think anyone would be surprised to know that Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are #1-2 in Total SG. I don’t think that anyone would be surprised to know that Justin Thomas ranks #3. But if I asked you to guess who is #4, who would you say?
If it was anyone other than Daniel Berger, you would be dead wrong. And Keep in mind, Scheffler is not playing this week, so Berger ranks #3 in this field.
Scheffler, McIlroy and JT all won at least one event during this 3-month stretch. Berger hasn’t, so unless you have really been paying attention, you may not have noticed his results, and I gotta be honest, I didn’t notice them at first, but I’ve been watching.
Berger has played in eight events during that timeframe. His worst finish was a T30 while the other seven were all Top-25 finishes. His best finishes came at the WM Phoenix Open where he finished T2 and in his last start, at the RBC Heritage where he finished T3. JT won that event in a playoff over Andrew Novak, but Berger was right there next on the leaderboard.
Berger’s a 5-tool player. He doesn’t hit it particularly far, but I don’t think that’s an important metric this week, but he gains strokes every week on approach, around the green and putting and that is a recipe for success at a classic design like Philly Cricket.
