1:40pm EDT - Jul 12/2026

THE PLAY: Boston Red Sox -120 Payton Tolle (LHP), Zach Thornton (LHP) Must Start

While, overall, it has been a disappointing first half of the season for the 45-48 Red Sox, they now have a chance to go into the All-Star Break with nine straight road wins for the first time since 1977! The current trip has already seen the Sox sweep both the Angels and White Sox. Now they can do the same to the Mets, who - at this point - are an embarrassment to humanity. No team has been worse to bet on this season. You'd be down nearly 24 units if you played the Mets on the ML every game. (Hopefully, you haven't done that!)

Meanwhile, despite their sub-.500 record, I would not count out Boston as a playoff contender. They have a top five run differential (+26) in the American League. Yesterday was their AL-leading ninth shutout of the season as both the starting rotation and bullpen continue to excel. In fact, they used a fill-in starter (Eduardo Rivera) on Saturday and still managed to win 4-0. That makes it 13 wins in the last 15 games and 16 wins in the last 21 games overall. It will be rookie Payton Tolle getting the starting nod this afternoon. Last time out, Tolle tossed six shutout innings of two-hit ball. The Boston bullpen has the third lowest ERA (3.25) in all of baseball.

Tolle and the Red Sox bullpen should have little difficulty facing a Mets lineup that is bottom five in batting average, on base percentage and slugging. On the road, they are second to last in runs scored per game (3.8). Yesterday marked the ninth time this season that the Mets have been shutout. It was also the eighth game where they were held to three hits or fewer. They're 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position in this series! Zach Thornton, making just his third career start, isn't the answer on the mound. He may work behind an opener, so be sure to click "Action" when betting the Red Sox here.

Consultant Bio

After spending the previous decade at Covers Experts, Bryan Power has wasted little time establishing himself here at WagerTalk. A consistent winner since first emerging on the scene back in 2011, Power didn't have a single losing calendar year in his first decade as a pro handicapper!  In April & May of this year (2022), he went on an amazing 154-99-2 (+$41,322) with all plays! October is when he truly made his mark at WT, at one point cashing 22 of 26 plays (85%).

Power handicaps football (both NFL and college), basketball (NBA and college), MLB, Soccer (most major European leagues), and the UFC. He uses a personal set of power ratings, combined with situational handicapping, to make his selections. Multiple bets per day across multiple sports are the norm. Client plays are rated 3%-5%.
