THE PLAY: FC Basel 106
3% Basel (3:00 ET): Basel will be hoping for the proverbial “new manager bounce” on Thursday as they look to win their final League Phase matchup here in the Europa League and possibly advance to the knockout stage of the competition. Victory alone would not guarantee advancement for the Swiss side. Sitting 27th in the table, and two points behind 24th place Celtic, they’ll need results to go their way elsewhere. But Basel can only control what happens here and I see it being a victory in Stephan Lichtsteiner’s debut at the helm.
Basel actually won 4-3 on Sunday, in the Swiss Super League, scoring at the death to get by FC Zurich. That was not enough to save Ludovic Magnin’s job as he was sacked Monday with the club still sitting some 10 points off league leaders Thun. Here in the Europa League, Basel have lost five of their seven League Phase matches, including each of the last three. However, going by xPts (expected points), they should actually be higher than Thursday’s opponent, Viktoria Plzen, who are already guaranteed to go through to the knockout stage. So I’m not at all surprised to see Basel as clear favorites on the 3-way line here. They should definitely be the more motivated side.
Plzen have not lost a League Phase match so far, but they’ve been very fortunate to draw in five of the seven matches. Opta actually has them in the bottom 10 in xPts in the competition and bottom five in xG. The key has been conceding only three times, but that’s very fortunate given a number of 8.9 xGA (expected goals allowed). Should also be noted that Plzen have not won any of their last 6 away matches (across all competitions) and they’ve played only one competitive match (last week’s 1-1 draw w/ Porto). Bottom line: there should be a clear edge in motivation in this fixture. 3% Basel (Play to -130)

After spending the previous decade at Covers Experts, Bryan Power has wasted little time establishing himself here at WagerTalk. A consistent winner since first emerging on the scene back in 2011, Power didn't have a single losing calendar year in his first decade as a pro handicapper! In April & May of this year (2022), he went on an amazing 154-99-2 (+$41,322) with all plays! October is when he truly made his mark at WT, at one point cashing 22 of 26 plays (85%).
Power handicaps football (both NFL and college), basketball (NBA and college), MLB, Soccer (most major European leagues), and the UFC. He uses a personal set of power ratings, combined with situational handicapping, to make his selections. Multiple bets per day across multiple sports are the norm. Client plays are rated 3%-5%.
