Projected score: Detroit 4.9, Kansas City 3.1
Projected first five: Detroit 2.8, Kansas City 1.3
The batting orders remain projected. Bobby Witt Jr. is unavailable with a back injury, while Jac Caglianone is excluded because of the unresolved shoulder issue. Tyler Tolbert projects at shortstop. The current matchup card lists Troy Melton at 1.80 ERA and 0.87 WHIP against Randy Dobnak at 1.93 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.
Kansas City has produced 3.3 runs per game with a .692 OPS over its most recent ten games. Its recent performance against right-handed pitching produced a .704 OPS. July as a whole has been better than the season baseline, but the lineup downgrade from Witt’s absence offsets most of that improvement.
Detroit scoring calculation:
Starting-pitcher analysis
Dobnak’s 1.93 ERA is not treated as his true run-prevention level. His 14 innings include eight walks against seven strikeouts, a 1.50 WHIP and a fielding-independent estimate near 5.7. His 2026 minor-league performance—4.35 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 80⅔ innings—also supports substantial regression.
Melton has allowed 11 earned runs, 33 hits and 15 walks in 55 innings. His July line is approximately 17⅓ innings, one earned run and 25 strikeouts. A fielding-independent estimate near 3.9 prevents the projection from simply extending the 1.80 ERA, but his command, contact suppression and six-inning workload remain significantly better than Dobnak’s.
Starter | IP | ER | H | K | BB |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Randy Dobnak, KCR | 4 1/3 | 2.8 | 5.3 | 2.3 | 2.6 |
Troy Melton, DET | 6 | 1.3 | 4.3 | 5.8 | 1.7 |
Kansas City received seven innings from Seth Lugo Wednesday, leaving the bullpen comparatively rested. Daniel Lynch IV and Steven Cruz handled the final two innings.
Detroit’s bullpen covered 3⅔ innings Wednesday, with Drew Sommers, Drew Anderson, Kyle Finnegan and Kenley Jansen all appearing. Tuesday’s early starter exit created another heavy bullpen game, although position players absorbed part of the blowout workload. Finnegan and Jansen receive reduced availability/effectiveness weighting.
Bullpen | Expected IP | Expected ER | Workload adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
KCR | 4.0 | 2.1 | Rested, but poor season-level run prevention |
DET | 3.0 | 1.8 | Recent high-leverage usage adds 0.28 KCR runs |
Rank 1 represents best and rank 30 represents worst.
Team | Starting pitcher ERA+WHIP rank | Bullpen last 10 days ERA / WHIP | Bullpen rank | Lineup last 10 days runs / wOBA | Lineup rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
DET | Melton: 2 | 4.12 / 1.31 | 16 | 43 / .311 | 14 |
KCR | Dobnak: 10 | 5.34 / 1.50 | 27 | 33 / .303 | 22 |
