THE PLAY: Washington Nationals Total Over 4.5 (-114) Mitch Spence (RHP) Must Start
Washington Nationals Team Total OVER 4.5
This is a great spot to back a Nationals offense that has been swinging the bats extremely well.
Washington has scored six or more runs in four straight games and continues to generate quality at-bats throughout the lineup. The offense is seeing the ball well right now, and they draw a favorable pitching matchup against Mitch Spence.
Spence has made just one appearance this season, and it could not have gone much worse. He lasted only four innings while allowing four hits, six earned runs, and five walks. Even looking back to last season, the results weren't encouraging, as he posted a 5.10 ERA and consistently struggled to limit damage.
The game script is another reason to like the over. Spence isn't likely to work deep into the game, especially if he struggles early. That means plenty of innings against a Kansas City bullpen that ranks among the worst in baseball.
The Royals' relief corps has been one of the weakest units in the league, creating additional scoring opportunities once the starters exit. If Washington continues its recent offensive form, they'll have chances against both the starter and the bullpen.
With the Nationals swinging hot bats, Spence carrying poor recent numbers, and a vulnerable bullpen waiting behind him, Washington is in a strong position to score at least five runs.
