Portland Trail Blazers vs Phoenix Suns Predictions

  • Phoenix Suns -1.5 at Portland Trail Blazers
  • Total: 218 Points
  • The under is 6-1 in the Suns’ last seven games.

Talk about two teams going in opposite directions in this one. Phoenix has aspirations at winning the NBA Championship this year, and Portland is looking at trading players to start the rebuilding process. These games can be deceiving to wager on because at first glance you might immediately want to bet the Suns, but before we run to the window let’s make sure to look at the situation, injuries and trends.

Phoenix might be the favorite, and one of the best teams in the league, but this is a horrible spot for them. Ayton missed last nights game and they got beaten fairly easily by a Clippers team with no Paul George. I watched last night’s game, and they really looked unorganized and I’m wondering if the Booker and Ayton absences are taking it’s toll. They’ve won so many games that it’s easy to see them resting Chris Paul tonight along with Booker and Ayton because they only have two games in the next five days and it’s a good part of the schedule to rest up.

It’s been rough for the Trailblazers as an organization as they are moving closer and closer to throwing in the towel on the season and building for the future. Injuries to key players, the firing of the GM and trade rumors have taken all the wind out of the sails and that’s resulted in five straight losses and eight losses in nine games with the lone win being against lowly Detroit.

In their last game, Portland was a three point favorite and lost by five to Minnesota and in their five game losing streak they’ve not covered the spread in all five. Lillard is at least back, but that’s about the only positive thing I can find about this team these days. They are catching the Suns in a somewhat vulnerable spot as this is the second night in a back to back, and Booker is out and Ayton is questionable, so maybe this is the night that Portland can sneak out a win or maybe just an ATS victory?

As for what to do in this game betting wise, we first have to wait and see what the Phoenix roster will look like tonight, but I’m liking the under in this one. Phoenix won’t have a ton of energy, and Portland has scored 94 or less in three out of five games. 218 is a big number for a tire Phoenix team and a bad Portland team…take the under.

Portland Trail Blazers vs Phoenix Suns Analysis from The GoldSheet

The Blazers have some legit excuses for their current predicament which includes losses in 8 of the last 9 games. Among them are recent missed games by Damian Lillard and now CJ McCollum, whose collapsed lung likely keeps him out a bit longer, and what has been one of the league’s toughest schedules the first two months.

There is also the real possibility that Portland has experienced a drop-off on the sidelines with Chauncey Billups cutting his teeth as an NBA head coach after Terry Stotts was deemed expendable after too many early playoff exits. Lillard’s return to active duty on Sunday vs. recently-staggering Minnesota suggested staleness as he hit only 5 of 17 from the floor. But dating back to Lillard’s last four games, including three before his ab injury, Portland has lost them all, and rest assured Phoenix remembers getting horse-whipped 134-105 way back on Oct. 23 in the worst Suns effort of the season.

Suns hurting now, too, with Devin Booker (hamstring) out and Deandre Ayton having missed more than a week with a non-Covid illness, plus backup C Frank Kaminsky down with a bad knee. That leaves Javale McGee or a small-ball C like Jae Crowder on the floor for Monty Williams as Phoenix looks to bounce back from only its fifth loss of the season last night at the Clippers (Suns only 1-3 vs. line in previous four spots after a setback).
