Detroit Pistons vs Utah Jazz Analysis
The Jazz have lost two straight as Rudy Gobert continues to miss games due to COVID protocols, and they will travel to Detroit to take on the Pistons who are coming off a rare win (albeit against Orlando) in their last game. The Jazz are a -11.5 road favorite tonight with a total of 224.5, so let’s examine these numbers and see if we can find a way to make some money in Motor City.
No Gobert for the Jazz
The Jazz sat all their starters on Friday in a wave the white flag game against Toronto after Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID, and while they looked good in the first half they eventually wore down and got beat by 14. Last game they returned their starters, minus Gobert, and were soundly beat by the Pacers where the absence of Gobert reared its ugly head as Sabonis went for 42 points.
I am going to be careful in this handicap as I don’t think season-long against the spread/totals stats are going to tell us much as Gobert has played most games. The Jazz are 1-2 this season without Rudy, and I do think it’s worth noting that opponents have scored 122 and 125 the last two games without him.
Not Powerful Pistons
The 8-30 Pistons have won three out of five games, but in Pistons fashion the two games they lost were by 29, and 30 points. They recently beat a bad Orlando team, and the win against Milwaukee was one of the surprises of the year, but that’s what it was…a surprise. This team doesn’t have a true superstar, and while Bey and Diallo flashed some scoring brilliance when the team was without all their other normal starters, now that Stewart, Hayes and Cunningham are back we see just how inadequate this starting lineup is.
Even with Gobert out of the lineup, I don’t believe the Pistons have the inside presence to truly take advantage of it. Nothing stands out from an ATS or Totals perspective to give us a clear trend for Detroit, but the Pistons do offer us some value I believe.
Detroit Pistons vs Utah Jazz Prediction
I don’t think the Pistons can score enough points to help get this total over 224.5, so I’m taking the under. The Jazz only scored 108 and 113 their two games without Gobert, and even though they gave up big points totals to Toronto and Indiana, the game went over because Sabonis had a career game, and against Toronto the Jazz started a G-League team. I don’t see these two offenses putting up enough points to get over this high total, I’ll take the UNDER.

Detroit Pistons vs Utah Jazz Preview from GoldSheet
Detroit is coming off a straight up win against Orlando, and the Pistons are 3-2 straight up in their last 5, and double-digits is generally a serious line of equalization in large respect in the NBA. Even the lowly Pistons are 6-3 against the points since Thanksgiving getting 10 or more, and 8-6 on the season as double-digit dogs. Funny how that works. However, Detroit has rarely put two winning efforts together and is 1-6 vs. the spread in the next game after a straight up loss this year and last season the Pistons were just 4-13 vs. the points after winning a game.
Donovan Mitchell returned with 36 pts against the Pacers on Saturday, and Mike Conley should be ready to go with the Jazz idle on Sunday and Tuesday, leaving only C Rudy Gobert (Covid protocol) as the only missing Jazz starter. Utah will play some angry notes after suffering 2 straight losses and falling back a game in tight Western Conference race.
