San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Analysis

The San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants in the first game of the last regular season series. San Fran has been out of playoff contention for awhile and the Friars are still clinging to the second wild card spot, one game ahead of the Phillies and three up on the Brewers.

John Brebbia and Joe Musgrove are the starters, first pitch in Petco Park is set for 9:40 PM EDT / 6:40 PDT.

Bullpen Game For Giants Set For Tonight : Consider When Placing a Bet!

As poorly as the Giants have played at times this year, they’re still closer to making the playoffs than I thought – just 6.0 games behind Philadelphia for the final wild card berth.

If some of their key players could have stayed healthy this season – and gotten better and more consistent performance from their bullpen – it could have been a different result for this team by the Bay.

With John Brebbia as the “starter” tonight, it looks like a bullpen game for San Francisco. Not a total surprise since two of their top four starters – Logan Webb and Alex Wood – are on the 15-day IL, effectively done for the season.

The Giants took two of three games from the Diamondbacks at home last weekend, scoring a combined 18 runs. And they’re finishing the regular season on a roll, winning eight of their last 10 games.

Padres in Positive Spirits With Lesser Known Names In Lineup

For San Diego and Joe Musgrove, this will more than likely be a “tuneup” game, to keep him in good form until his first postseason start. He’s been the ace of the Friars’ staff with a 10-7 record, 3.03 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. And Java Joe has been very reliable this year with 29 starts, 175.0 innings and 177 strikeouts.

San Diego as a team is limping into the postseason, with a 4-6 record in their last 10 outings. The new-and-improved offense with Josh Bell and Juan Soto hasn’t come to life, as they’ve scored just two runs or less in their last six games.

On paper, this should be a powerhouse lineup with Manny Machado, Soto and Bell. If he stays healthy and doesn’t take any more PEDs, Fernando Tatis will be back with the Padres in 2023.

There may be some chemistry issues with this combination of players, as the Padres played better baseball with the less-talented “grinders” in the lineup – like Trent Grisham, Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim.

San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Prediction & Expert Betting Pick

Handicapping games this late in the regular season can be tricky and have lots of variables. Especially with a lot of younger players in the lineup and on the mound.

With the Padres ace and the Giants bullpen on the mound – and a struggling Friars lineup – I like the full game under total runs scored.

Prediction: Under 7.5 Total Runs Scored -110
