Red Sox vs Twins Analysis

One of Boston’s most beloved sports traditions will resume on Monday morning after a two-year interruption. Patriots Day isn’t a national holiday, but to Bostonians it is and they will watch the Sox in the morning and the Boston Marathon in the afternoon.

The Sox will look for a 3-1 series victory after dropping the first game and winning the last two. Boston won 8-1 yesterday afternoon behind five shutout innings from Michael Wacha. They led 2-1 going into the bottom of the eighth and exploded for six runs to seal the deal.

Not Just Another Monday

For Red Sox left-hander and Milton, Massachusetts native Rich Hill, the Boston Marathon was always special as his father ran the Marathon 37 times in his life. With the Red Sox set to play another Marathon Monday game at Fenway Park, Hill will be thinking about his father who passed away Friday at the age of 94. He will obviously be pitching this game with a heavy heart.

In his first outing of 2022, Rich Hill became the oldest pitcher in the majors to start a game….For the fourth consecutive season! The ageless Hill defies father time by being crafty and limiting hard contact. Hill pitched decent in his first outing but allowed a three-run rally on some well placed hits. He didn’t make it through five innings and that’s probably the expectation on Monday as well, so we should see a good amount of innings from the Sox pen.

The Red Sox offense was one of the most formidable in 2021, ranking fifth in runs scored with a .777 OPS. They are heating up recently but we still haven’t seen the full potential from the likes of Kike Hernandez. Rafael Devers does continue to rake with a 14-game hitting streak that dates back to last season. Devers is currently hitting .353 with a .989 OPS and 2 home runs.

Twin Hitters Ice Cold

After losing four of their last five games, the Minnesota Twins have dropped to 3-6 to open the season. The Twins’ current skid directly correlates to their lack of production at the plate. The Twins have scored two runs or fewer in the same four of last five games they have lost. It hasn’t helped that promising leadoff man Byron Buxton has missed the last two games with an injury. The Twins have a combined team OPS of only .632 while ranking 26th in runs scored.

The Twins even managed to spoil a strong outing out of Bailey Ober yesterday. The 6’8″ towering right hander threw five shutout innings before allowing two runs in the sixth. Ultimately the bullpen blew up in the eighth inning and allowed Boston to put the game out of reach and win 8-1.

Minnesota will turn to Dylan Bundy to try and salvage a series split. Bundy pitched well in his first start of the season, holding the Seattle Mariners to just one hit and one walk over five shutout innings. Bundy has been inconsistent over the years with a career ERA of 4.69 and WHIP of 1.30. Bundy can go from a hot streak to looking like one of the most hittable pitchers in the league.

Red Sox vs Twins Prediction

The Red Sox bats woke up with those six runs in the eighth inning. In an game with additional inspiration, you could see that trend continuing.

Boston doesn’t have an impressive collective average against Bundy, but they have a number of hitters with individual success. Xander Bogaerts in particular is 12-for-36 for a .333 batting average, 1.123 OPS and three home runs. Rafael Devers also has two home runs in 20 at bats against Bundy. Bundy throws a mediocre fast ball and Red Sox sluggers should be feasting.

Hill should be able to keep the Twins bats on ice for the early innings and you can expect a maximum effort. Alex Cora has wide array of bullpen options to finish off the late innings.

All signs seem to point towards the Red Sox on Marathon Monday in Boston. Give me the Sox money line with plenty of confidence and sprinkle a bit on the +135 run line.

Official Play: Boston Red Sox -140 money line (with sprinkle on +135 run line -1.5)
