New York Yankees vs Baltimore Orioles Analysis

The New York Yankees face the Baltimore Orioles in first game of a four game weekend set from beautiful Camden Yards. The dream is over for the Orioles who now sit five games behind in the Wild Card race with only six to play.

The Yankees officially locked up the American League East in their last series against the Boston Red Sox.

We have a couple of veteran right-handed pitchers going head-to-head with Jordan Lyles getting the nod for Baltimore and Domingo German toeing the rubber for New York. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST/4:05 PST.

Slim Hopes Slipping Away

The Baltimore Orioles record dropped to 80-76 on the year after losing 5-3 to the Boston Red Sox yesterday afternoon. Mike Baumann pitched only four innings and allowed two runs on six hits.

Reliever Dillon Tate suffered his fourth loss of the season on a JD Martinez game deciding two run bomb over the Green Monster. Outfielder Kyle Stowers went 2 for 4 with a solo-blast in the top of the 7th.

Baltimore struggled over the past week and it may have cost them a Wild Card as they stumbled. With only six games remaining they are five games, making it a stretch for them to reach the post-season.

The Orioles rank 19th in runs scored and 20th in batting average on the season. The pitching staff ranks 26th in opponent batting average and 18th in team ERA. Struggling starter Jordan Lyles will take his 11-11 record and 4.55 ERA into Yankee Stadium.

He only lasted two innings against the Boston Red Sox Last time out with two runs allowed on five hits. Lyles has faced the Yankees five times this season and allowed 17 runs across 28.2 innings of work.

Judge Looks For 62

The New York Yankees had a scheduled day off yesterday after clinching the AL East against the Toronto Blue Jays in their prior series. The beat Toronto 8-3 with a watered-down lineup after clinching the division on the the night before.

You probably haven’t heard about this yet but Aaron Judge hit his 61st homerun of the season to tie Roger Maris for the Yankee homerun record. Gerrit Cole had a perfect game going in the 6th inning but ended with a 6.1 inning three earned run line.

Judge is an MVP frontrunner with an opportunity for the Triple Crown. He is a lock for homeruns & RBI and currently has a .313 batting average, two points behind the .315 average of Luis Arraez.

The Bronx Bombers rank highly across the board as they rank 2nd in runs scored and 3rd in team ERA. The 30 year-old Domingo German takes the bump on Friday against Baltimore.

German is 2-3 on the season with a 3.30 ERA & 1.12 WHIP. He faced the Boston Red Sox his last time out and allowed three runs across five innings.

New York Yankees vs Baltimore Orioles Prediction

The New York Yankees are heavily favored with a money line set at -190 while the Baltimore Orioles sit at +160 with a total of 8.5. Motivation is definitely going to be a factor moving forward in the regular season.

If you gave the Orioles players truth serum they would admit to knowing their season is over. The Yankees are just looking to get healthy for the post-season. However they did rest Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton on Wednesday and then had Thursday off.

They don’t want their everyday players to get rusty and we know Judge won’t sit til he hits 62. Current Yankee hitters own Lyles with a .342 batting average, .886 OPS, and three homeruns across 120 at bats.

German doesn’t pitch very deep into games and the New York pen is banged up. I can’t imagine playing a side here, over for this guy.

Prediction: Over 8 -115
