Guardians vs Royals Analysis

The Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Guardians collide for the first of three games between American League Central rivals on Memorial Day Monday. The Guardians are coming off a series where they lost two of three games against the Detroit Tigers. Meanwhile the Royals were able to split a four game series against the first-place Minnesota Twins.

Royals Split With Twins

The Kansas City Royals ended up with a 2-2 series split after losing 7-3 in Minnesota against the Twins yesterday. Starter Zach Greinke was roughed up, giving up five runs on six hits including three home runs in only four innings. Greinke hasn’t been in good form and is now 0-4 on the season. M.J.Melendez and Hunter Dozier both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.

Scoring runs has been an issue the Royals who rank 24th in runs scored with just under four per game. They rank 14th with a team batting average of .237 and 25th with an OPS of .664.

Johnathan Heasley gets his fourth start of the season after going 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA after the first three. He struggled with command in his last start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, walking six batters in five innings while limiting the damage to three runs. He has now walked 13 batters in only 13 13.1 innings of work.

Guardians Need To Bounce Back

The Cleveland Guardians lost two of three games against the Detroit Tigers this weekend with both losses coming by one run. In yesterday’s 2-1 loss, the Guardians only mustered seven singles with no extra-base hits. Owen Miller was the only player with a multi-hit game. Starting pitcher Triston McKenzie was spot-on but received the loss nonetheless, after hurling 7.2 innings while allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out eight.

Cleveland began the season on a positive but have essentially hit a brick wall. They are 3-8 over the course of their last 11 games while scoring three runs or less in seven of the losses.

On the season, the Guardians rank 11th in runs scored with 4.6 runs a game. Slugger Jose Ramirez has played at an M.V.P. level as his 12 home runs and 48 RBI set him among the league leaders.

The Guardians will hand the ball to struggling starter Zach Plesac. Plesac is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.43 WHIP on the season. He was awful in his last start against the Houston Astros, only lasting 4.2 innings while allowing seven earned runs on nine hits.

Cleveland Guardians vs Kansas City Royals Prediction

Current form makes both teams difficult to back as the Guardians are 3-8 in their last 11 while the Royals are 2-8 in their last ten games. Neither starting pitcher has inspired much confidence, making it even harder to back a side.

The only directions I can look for this one is Cleveland and the over in some form. The Guardians should have no trouble getting on Heasley and making him pay for those walks. Heasley isn’t going to last long and their bullpen ERA is third-worst in the majors at 4.76.

The Royals’ bats have come around a bit recently and should be able to score some runs on a struggling Plesac. The over is 9-1 in the Royals’ last ten games. Let’s hope for some fireworks and back the over once again.
