Brewers vs Padres Analysis

The Milwaukee Brewers visit Petco Park to play the San Diego Padres in the rubber match of a three game series. Southpaw Aaron Ashby gets the start against veteran right hander Yu Darvish after the Brew Crew evened the series last night with a 4-1 win.

Brewers Preview

Aaron Ashby is more of a middle reliever than traditional starter, but has made three starts this year and went at least four innings in each of them. In 28.1 innings he’s compiled a 3.49 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP with 34 strikeouts. However, control has been an issue as he’s given up 17 walks – that’s almost six per nine innings of work.

At the start of the season, it looked like the Brewers pitching staff would have to carry what was a light-hitting lineup, but that’s changed quite a bit.

The Brew Crew sports a 6th best OPS of .725 and a 4th best OPS against righties of .746. The hurlers are still solid with a 9th best team ERA of 3.41 and 11th best WHIP of 1.19.

Padres Preview

The Padres have stepped up their offense in the last few weeks, powered by Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer.

Given their solid performance along with good starting pitching, it looks like they’ll be just fine until Fernando Tatis Jr. rejoins the team later this summer. The Friars are also 7th best in OPS against left-handed pitching at .751 with a .247 average.

San Diego’s pitching is in the top 1/3rd of the league with a 10th best in team ERA at 3.43, and a 7th best WHIP of 1.15.

Sean Manaea has been a good addition to the staff, plus rookie MacKenzie Gore has contributed sooner and better than expected. Veteran manager Bob Melvin has also been a steadying influence on this team.

Yu Darvish has been solid this year through eight starts and 46 innings with a 3.91 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 37 strikeouts. He’s thrown well in his three home starts, giving up a combined three earned runs and going at least six innings in each outing.

Brewers vs Padres Prediction

These are two of the better teams in the National League and aren’t many weak spots on either roster. Both bullpens are about even at 12th and 14th best in ERA, but the Padres have the starting pitching edge with Darvish over Ashby. I’ll go with San Diego on the moneyline.

Prediction: San Diego Padres Moneyline
