Boston Red Sox vs Cincinnati Reds Analysis

The Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox begin a quick two game interleague series from Fenway Park on Tuesday evening. The Red Sox were embarrassed last night in a 10-0 shutout loss against the last place Baltimore Orioles.

The Reds fell short of their first three game sweep of the season after losing 6-4 against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon.

The starting pitching matchup features two veteran right-handers with Michael Wacha taking the ball for Boston and Luis Castillo getting the nod for Cincinnati. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.

Cincinnati Streak Snapped at Four

The Cincinnati Reds came into Sunday on a four game win streak, which was easily their longest of the season. However they got back on course with a 6-4 home loss against the San Francisco Giants.

Tyler Mahle had his best outing with 6.2 innings of shutout baseball while allowing only one hit and striking out eight. The bullpen let him in a major way as they allowed six runs in the final 2+ innings of the contest.

Albert Alomara Jr. hit his first homerun of the season, going 2 for 4 with three RBI. The Reds are still in for a long season, not only do they have the least wins in the MLB, they are also already 10+ games behind the division leading Milwaukee Brewers.

Even including the four game win streak, they are only 5-5 in their last 10 games. Their offense has struggled to find consistency as they rank 23rd with a team OPS of .664 while scoring only 4.23 runs per game.

Luis Castillo is on the mound for Tuesday nights contest. Castillo is 1-2 with a 4.35 ERA, he held the Chicago Cubs to two runs in five innings in his last start.

Sox Don’t Show Up On Holiday

The Boston Red Sox must have thought they were off for Memorial Day because they didn’t bother showing up in a pathetic 10-0 loss to the bottom feeding Baltimore Orioles.

The ageless wonder Rich Hill got absolutely lit up, allowing six runs on seven hits in only four innings. Their potent offensive attack could only muster four scattered hits and only two doubles.

The series against Baltimore was a complete disappointment as they lost three of five games right after they had went 4-0-1 in the prior five series. Prior to getting shutout last night the Sox offense had been a run scoring machine, they currently rank 3rd with a .743 OPS and an average of 4.78 runs per game.

Red Sox Nation will turn to Michael Wacha to right the ship. Wacha is 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA across 35 innings on the season. However he has struggled to pitch deep into games as he has only completed six innings once in seven starts.

He wasn’t sharp in his last start, giving up five runs on seven hits in only 4.1 innings pitched against the Chicago White Sox.

Boston Red Sox vs Cincinnati Reds Prediction

The money line is set at -135 for the Boston Red Sox and +115 for the Cincinnati Reds with a total of 8.5. Even after last night’s 10-0 loss, Boston is on an outstanding 13-7 run over their last 20 games.

They have scored 139 runs during that span of time for a robust average of 6.95. You would have to assume that the Boston bats get back on track with Castillo on the mound.

Even if Castillo can keep a lid on them, he doesn’t pitch deep into games, leaving the Red Sox ample time to feast on a bullpen ranked 28th with a 4.82 ERA. Michael Wacha has been spot on at home with 1-0 record and 1.17 ERA in three starts.

He and the Boston bullpen are a bit below average but should be able to contain and weak and beat up Cincinnati offensive attack. Let’s roll with the Sox run line at +140 odds.

Prediction: Boston Red Sox -1.5 +140
