#887 / 888 Quinnipiac vs Fairfield Under 158.5

Quinnipiac enters Friday with a 1.5-game lead over Fairfield for the top spot in the MAAC standings. The Bobcats won the first meeting 66-64 at Fairfield on January 28 in a game where neither team was particularly good on offense. We’re expecting some more points in this one, but we’re not ready to buy into this total being in the upper 150s. Despite the 130 points that were scored in that first meeting, Friday’s opening total of 158.5 points is higher than the total was in that January meeting. Again, we’re not ready to accept that should be the case. Neither team has played since Sunday, so both coaching staffs have had the full week to prep for this one. Even in a losing effort, Fairfield’s defense held Quinnipiac to its lowest scoring output of the season. The Bobcats play at by-far the fastest pace in the MAAC, but you still have to put the ball in the hoop. Quinnipiac is top-20 in the country in adjusted tempo, but outside of the top-200 in offensive efficiency and effective field goal shooting. Only two of Fairfield’s last ten games would have eclipsed this total in the upper-150s. Only two of Quinnipiac’s last 11 games would have eclipsed this total. This game will certainly be played at a fast pace, but with first place in the league on the line, we should also see a fair amount of defensive intensity as well. With both teams having a full week to prep for this one, we’re expecting a good defensive effort.
