UAB vs Louisiana Tech Predictions

• UAB Blazers -13.5 vs Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
• Total: 50.5 Points
• The over is 11-6 in Louisiana Tech’s last 17 games.
• Removing the 2020 Covid-affected season, Louisiana Tech is 22-9 against the spread as an underdog since 2014.

This looks like one of those meaningful revenge games, and it’s also one with a major strength vs. weakness matchup. UAB flat out blew last year’s meeting with Louisiana Tech. The Blazers were sloppy early but got things going and appeared to be control with a two touchdown lead going into the fourth quarter, but UAB then uncharacteristically fell apart and let Louisiana Tech back into the game. The Bulldogs eventually forced overtime when they hit a 24-yard TD pass with just ten seconds left on the clock. After trading field goals in the first overtime period, the Blazers ended up losing outright in the second overtime as pretty decent sized favorites. UAB gave that game away. La Tech had a very long pick-six score and the Blazers managed to miss three field goals. I definitely see this as meaningful revenge.

UAB has a big fundamental advantage as the Blazers should dominate the ground game stats here. UAB is +67 yards per game in conference play while Louisiana Tech is -107 yards per game. UAB should also be an angry team taking the field as they’ve had two weeks to stew off a very ugly upset loss to Rice. La Tech is out of a loss to Old Dominion and the Bulldogs are on a four-game losing streak. La Tech played well early in the season but lost three very winnable games and it looks to me like the Bulldogs’ ship has sailed as far as this season is concerned. This is the right opponent at the right time for the hosts here, and I expect a fairly lopsided result. UAB minus the points in this one.

We suspect that not even advice from Papa Lou or a pep talk from alum Terry Bradshaw is going to help Skip Holtz and the current La Tech situation that confirmed its downgrade when losing at ODU last weekend. Skip’s seven-season bowl streak in Ruston thus appears in serious jeopardy, and we’re not sure about the status of starting QB Austin Kendall, who was knocked out of last week’s game. There is mounting evidence to overlook Skip’s once-gaudy road ‘dog mark amid a current four-game losing streak that is the longest of the Holtz tenure at La Tech. UAB itching to not only atone for last year’s 37-34 loss at Ruston, but an admitted flat effort the last time seen vs. Rice. Preceding romps past FAU and Southern Miss suggest the Blazers and big-play QB Dylan Hopkins are capable of much more.
