Controversial, yes, but in my eyes, Lane Kiffin knows exactly what’s right and what’s wrong about NCAA football and the changing landscape (NIL, transfer portal).

His appearance and discussion at SEC media days was exceptional. On the field, his offenses are very difficult to defend and his defenses are improving.

His usage of the transfer portal is already legendary. Missing from his resume is a signature win vs. Alabama.

They started fast vs. the Crimson Tide, but couldn’t close the deal, losing 30-24. The season and the focus fell apart after that. ’23 brings a fresh start.

Ole Miss Football Predictions: Strengths, Weaknesses, Improvements, Declines

Kiffin’s teams have always demonstrated run game proficiency. Half of their one-two RB attack remains and I’m calling for another 5.0 per carry season.

Perhaps not fully satisfied with QB Dart, Lane brought in ex-OK St QB Sanders, who himself has 40+ starts under his belt.

The top two targets from ’22 are gone but thanks to the “portal king”, reinforcements are here. WR Zakhari Franklin is NFL-ready, and two other targets might see significant action as well.

The OL is very good. In a rare move, a defensive coordinator LEFT Alabama. Pete Golding stayed in the SEC West and Ole Miss hopes that the defensive numbers will benefit from his past experience.

The Rebels lost their top four tacklers but as of this writing, a whopping five transfers are slated to start. Molding this group together is task #1.

It looks like they will switch to a 3-4 alignment. I’ll be checking progress with the new scheme all season long. There’s also a new special team coordinator. That move could be an upgrade.

Ole Miss Football Schedule: Which Games Will They Win?

The toughest two non-conference games are at Tulane and home to Georgia Tech. Their game at Alabama begins SEC play.

Will they be able to rebound the following week in a tough host of LSU? As noted in the Arkansas preview, Ole Miss totaled 703 yards but just 27 points vs. Arkansas. I’m pretty sure they remember that game.

The Rebels will be rested before heading to Auburn on 10/21. Can they go 2-0 here, and two weeks later, hosting A&M? That better be the case, as this year Ole Miss draws Georgia from the SEC East, and that will test Kiffin’s offensive acumen.

Ole Miss closes with an emotional game at Miss St. Kiffin and Mike Leach were an odd couple, but also good friends. Their games always seemed to come down to the end.

Ole Miss Football Bottom Line: Total Wins Expected Expert Pick

The talent level is 10-2 good, but the schedule is rougher and not laid out in perfect rhythm. As Lane himself said, having an opportunity to upset Alabama last year and then not delivering in the final minutes took quite a bit of steam out of them.

In retrospect, he said he needed to do more to prevent what happened after that (0-3 after that to close the season).

I’ll call this closer to 8-4 than 9-3, noting home games vs. Arkansas (after facing Alabama and LSU) and A&M (right before Georgia) as contests where the Rebels must be focused.

MY SEC schedule grid (assigns win % for each game), thinks 8-4 could be the ceiling. I’ll keep a close eye on all defensive stats as well as QB play, which can be streaky at times.

I’m concerned with letdowns at various times this season due to the scheduling pacing noted above. Note: Lane doesn’t mind winning and covering vs. inferior teams.
