Villanova at Tarleton State (FCS Playoffs-Second Round)
Matchup advantages all over the field in this one for UAC entrant Tarleton State. Currently the second choice to win the FCS Title Tarleton is a significantly different opponent than the one Villanova slayed last week. In that game Villanova was able to somewhat contain the one-dimensional Lehigh offense by limiting their potent run game to just 178 yards on 4.2 per carry. Villanova also forced a pair of fumbles and won the turnover margin battle 2-0. Here ‘Nova faces an equally dynamic rushing attack here as Tarleton averages 204.5 rypg (#12 in FCS) but also ranks #12 in passing yards per game at 267.8. That superb balance has Tarleton State ranked #4 in Total Offense racking up 472.3 typg and an FCS high of 44.1 points per game. Speed differential between the explosive Tarleton group and strong & plodding Lehigh is substantial and likely an element that will have success here vs. Villanova. Wildcats were able to overcome 7-0 third quarter deficit last week but falling behind against this team probably leads to more scoreboard separation. Defensive piece of that is the Texans nation leading +30 turnover margin which features their ball hawking secondary (23 interceptions #1 in FCS). That strength can become a real problem for Villanova if they’re mediocre aerial attack is forced to chase. Tarleton also now owns home field advantage in this half of the bracket now that North Dakota State has been knocked off. Travel situation is not ideal for Villanova which is now in their 3rd Playoff game in three weeks having played in-state the first two weeks and now flying into a hornets nest for an 11:00 am central start which is 10:00 am for Villanova’s body clock. ‘Cats have done a nice job getting to this point but Tarleton State (which went to Army early this season and won in 2OT 30-27) is the superior all around team. Gap in this contest is wide enough to expect a 14+ point Tarleton State win & cover.

Rob Veno has been entrenched in the sports handicapping community for 31 years. He was a major component in the success of Sportsmemo from its inception as a daily radio show in 1998. His 5% Bluechip releases have become synonymous with success, and he's carved a place for himself among the nation's elite handicappers. Rob's fundamental analysis of football, basketball, and baseball on the college and pro levels has him regarded as one of the best in the business at breaking down games. Rob began to make an imprint on the Las Vegas scene in the mid-1990s with his weekly football and basketball newsletter, which contained game selections and analysis. Over 30 sportsbooks on and off the strip, plus the famous Las Vegas Gambler's Book Club and newsstands nationwide, carried the publication, which expanded his recognition. He was subsequently invited into Las Vegas' most prestigious handicapping contests of that time, the Stardust Invitational in 1996 and 2004 and the Sunset Station Invitational in 2000. A veteran of sports handicapping radio, Rob began in 1992 by co-hosting a weekly Friday night show at 840 AM KVEG. He went on to do numerous live shows as a guest analyst from casino sportsbooks across the Las Vegas Valley, working with a litany of respected hosts and the most recognized handicappers in the business. Rob finally settled in as one of the mainstays on the daily Vegas Sportswire betting show, which ultimately became the famed Sportsmemo Radio Show and subsequent Podcast. His expertise has been heard on radio stations across the country over the years as he has done a multitude of guest analyst segments. Rob joined WagerTalk in the summer of 2020 and has quickly become a prominent member of their world-class handicapping roster. Rob is a Connecticut native, and after spending 11 years in Las Vegas from 1991-2002, he now resides outside of Philadelphia with his wife.
