What's the knock on starting pitchers these days? They never go deep into games. They never go through the order three times. Throwing 200+ innings in a season is now celebrated as a major accomplishment. All of the old school baseball fans that want to offer "Back in my day..." statements need to be watching Zac Gallen this month. The Diamondbacks' ace threw a whopping 243.2 innings last season after throwing 184.0 the year before. He is your posterchild for how many innings a starting pitcher can/should go during the season. How has he looked so far in 2024? Not good. In four Spring Training outings, Gallen had a 5.54 ERA with nine strikeouts and seven walks. He faced the Colorado Rockies on Opening Day, and on the surface, his numbers looked fine. In Colorado's last four games, the Rockies have struck out 38 times against the Diamondbacks and Cubs. Gallen got three against them on Thursday. That is concerning. The roof is going to be open today and tomorrow at Chase Field, which will help the ball carry. Nestor Cortes gave up four runs on five hits with two walks in 5.0 innings in his debut against the Astros. Both starting pitchers look vulnerable in this matchup, and with a first five total of 4.5 runs, all we really need is for one of them to not be sharp to help us hit this total against two quality lineups.
