Are the A's going to go 50-112 again this year? No. Unlike last year, Oakland actually has MLB-level talent at most positions. But that certainly wasn't the start the A's were looking for. Oakland dropped three of its first four games against the Guardians while getting out-scored 29-11 at the Oakland Coliseum. Six-foot-seven prospect Joe Boyle will take the mound after making three appearances with the A's last season. Oakland has him on the fast track because he only pitched 16.0 innings at the Triple-A level last season, essentially going right from Double-A to the big leagues last September. Boyle issued 93 walks in 117.1 innings in the minor leagues last season. In Spring Training, he issued 15 walks in 13 innings. That is concerning. The Red Sox entered this season with questions in their rotation, but Boston's rotation passed that first test with flying colors. The Red Sox allowed a total of ten runs in four games in Seattle to start the season. Tanner Houck should keep that run going with a strong performance in Oakland tonight. Until we see Boyle settle into his role in the A's rotation, this is an affordable spot to play against him while he's still battling command issues.
