Play Rating:
3% – Minnesota Twins -118 J Ryan (RHP) Must Start

In the first month of the season, bullpens are very important. Starting pitchers do not go deep into games because they are still getting stretched out. Managers want to give their bullpen guys plenty of work so that they can get into a groove. You probably won't find a bigger bullpen edge this weekend than the one that Minnesota enjoys over Kansas City. Entering the season, FanGraphs has Minnesota's bullpen ranked as the best in the American League while Kansas City is 27th in baseball. We saw that gap play out on Opening Day. Cole Ragans (6.0 IP) and Pablo Lopez (7.0 IP) were fantastic for their respective squads with the Twins taking a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning. What happened after that? The Royals' bullpen allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in 3.0 innings. Minnesota's bullpen allowed one hit and one walk in two scoreless innings. Minnesota's Joe Ryan opened his season on the road in Kansas City last year. He allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. In six career starts against the Royals, Ryan is 5-0 with an ERA of 1.50 with 41 strikeouts and ten walks. Between Ryan's success against this Royals' lineup and Minnesota's bullpen advantage, we see plenty of value on the Twins at an affordable number in this one.
