New York Mets vs San Diego Padres Analysis

The San Diego Padres and New York Mets both had aspirations of winning their respective divisions but will have to settle for head-to-head Wild-card showdown.

The Mets finished the regular season with a 101-61 record earning them home field advantage in the series. They played six games against each other this season and the Padres won four of those meetings.

Co-ace Max Scherzer will take the bump for New York while the righty Yu Darvish toes the rubber for San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 8:07 PM EST/5:07 PST from Citi Field in the Big Apple.

Mets Let Bye Slip Away

The New York Mets are playing in the National League Wild-card despite an impressive 101-61 record. The Mets led the National League East for the majority of the season but the Atlanta Braves closed in on them and took control of the division in a head-to-head sweep during the last week of the season.

Both teams won 101 games but the Braves owned the tie-breaker after the sweep and now have a bye and home field advantage in the next round.

The Mets have been one of the best offensive teams in the league this season as they rank 5th in runs scored, 2nd in batting average, 6th in OPS and 3rd in wRC+. The New York team ERA sits at 3.57 which ranks 7th in the majors.

A huge contributor to that was Max Scherzer who is 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. Scherzer has made 26 playoff appearances in his career, making him the experienced pitcher in this series. He pitched against the Padres back in July and took a loss after giving up only two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

First Playoff Run For New Look Padres

The new look San Diego Padres take a cross country trip to face the Mets after earning the 2nd Wild-card spot with an impressive 89 -73 record. They fell just short of 90 wins and still lost the National League West by a staggering 22 games.

The Padres have become a middling offensive attack as they finished the season 13th in runs scored and 15th with a .700 team OPS. Juan Soto must be licking his chops a showdown with a familiar foe in the New York Mets.

Soto is batting .303 with 16 homeruns and 42 RBI in 68 games against his former NL East rival. He is even better at Citi Field with an 1.173 OPS to go along with 10 homeruns and 23 RBI.

Soto had 5 homeruns and 14 RBI in the Washington Nationals World Series run in 2019. The San Diego pitching staff ranks 11th with a team ERA of 3.81. Yu Darvish gets the nod for San Diego on Friday.

Darvish is 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA and 0.95 WHIP on the season. Darvish dominated the Mets this season only one run allowed across two seven inning outings, one at each venue. He has held the opposition to two earned runs or less in 4 of his 7 post-season outings and this will be the 4th team he makes a playoff start for.

New York Mets vs San Diego Padres Prediction

The New York Mets are the biggest favorite of Friday’s four game MLB slate with a money line set at -150 while the San Diego Padres sit at +130 with a total of 7. It feels odd to mention distractions for a 101 win team but I firmly believe the Mets are physiologically shook after blowing the National League East.

The Braves essentially locked up the division with a three game weekend sweep over New York. Max Scherzer was rocked in the middle game of the series and he is an emotional pitcher who could be shook.

The Padres come into the game without the pressure. San Diego hits very well away from Petco Park with a .726 team OPS on the road. The Padres also won 5 of their last 6 on the road and four of their last 5 against the Mets.

They also have one of the leagues best records with a day of rest at 16-5. This sets up perfectly for a San Diego upset and Juan Soto will be a huge contributing factor.

Prediction: San Diego Padres Money Line +130 & Juan Soto Oerv 1.5 Total Bases +140 DK
