Arizona Diamondbacks vs Colorado Rockies Analysis

Sinker-ball specialist Chad Kuhl has had a solid, but unspectacular 2022 season. He has a 5-8 record with a 3.83 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP and 59 strikeouts in 82.1 innings and 15 starts. His control has been solid, giving up just 30 walks and eight home runs. Kuhl isn’t a strikeout specialist, but instead relies on keeping the ball down in the zone and avoiding hard contact.

The Rockies are in the top half of MLB in OPS with a 13th best .722 and .259 average, which is 2nd best in baseball. However, this isn’t a real power-hitting team like in years past. The Rox are only 21st best in home runs with 77.

The Achilles Heel of this team for years has been pitching and this year is no different. The Rockies have a 4th worst team and bullpen ERA with WHIPs over 1.40. It’s tough to win games when you give up almost five earned runs per game, and you make a lot of errors in the field.

Zac Gallen has pitched pretty well for the Snakes in 2022. In 15 starts he has a 3.40 ERA, a stellar 1.05 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts in 82 innings of work. He’s more of a power pitcher with a K rate of almost one per inning, and has only given up 23 walks and nine home runs.

As I’ve mentioned before, the D-Backs are not a great consistent hitting team as they’re in the bottom five with a .682 OPS and a meager .220 team batting average. But they know how to hit the long ball, as they’re 11th best in MLB at 96 long flies.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs Colorado Rockies Prediction

This is a pretty good pitching matchup between Kuhl and Gallen and I think they should hold each lineup in check the first two times through the lineup. Both bullpens are in the bottom-six of MLB, so I can’t trust either side to hold a lead late in the game. That’s why I’ll lean to the first 5 innings under total runs scored.

Prediction: 1st Five Innings Under Total Runs Scored
