THE PLAY: Elly De La Cruz Hits + Runs + RBIs Over 1.5 (-136) Action
The White Sox took a swing at the trade deadline, hoping to squeeze one last run out of veteran starting pitcher Luis Castillo. We admire Chicago for taking a shot, but Castillo has out-performed expectations for quite a while thanks to the pitcher-friendly conditions in Seattle that he enjoyed for the last four years. He enters Wednesday with a career-high .269 expected batting average, a career-high .344 weighted on-base average, a career-high 4.85 expected ERA and a career-low 19.7-percent strikeout rate. In his first start with the White Sox, Castillo allowed five runs on six hits with one walk in 4.0 innings against Boston last week. Over his last four starts, Castillo has allowed a total of eight home runs (in 21.0 innings pitched). Elly De La Cruz has been a little chilly at the plate over the last couple of weeks, but this matchup represents an ideal spot for him to break out of this mini-slump. De La Cruz still sits in the top-10th percentile among all hitters in average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate. Even though he's only hitting .182 in the month of August, De La Cruz has still eclipsed this 1.5 hits + runs + RBI mark in seven of his last 11 games. He went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored last night. He's 1-for-5 with a home run against Castillo in the past. Castillo has allowed lefty bats to hit .288 with a .354 on-base percentage against him this season. Thirteen of the 17 home runs that Castillo has allowed have come against lefties.
