Analysis

Obviously, this isn't how you should handicap every game, but let's start here: Entering this season, the Phillies' regular season win total was around 90 wins while the Padres' was in the neighborhood of 82. Preseason projections had the Phillies as the better team. Entering Friday, Philadelphia is 16-10 while San Diego is 14-14. The Phillies were projected to be the better team entering this season. The Phillies have been the better team so far this season. The Phillies have won each of Aaron Nola's last four starts. The Phillies have the rested bullpen. And this game is a pick'em? We'll take it. San Diego blew a five-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on Thursday in Colorado. The Padres will be playing at home on Friday, but they certainly won't have a rest advantage. We're not going to go through the flight logs, but the Phillies were probably checking into their San Diego hotel before the Padres landed home from Denver. Philadelphia is coming to town after a shut-out win over Cincinnati after Zack Wheeler threw a one-hitter. The Padres' bullpen threw 100 pitches in yesterday's loss with five relievers throwing 14+ pitches. Yuki Matsui and Wandy Peralta have each pitched on back-to-back days, so they will both be unavailable tonight. Joe Musgrove has allowed 3+ runs in five of his six starts this season. In his last three starts, he has 11 strikeouts with seven walks. We'll gladly take the Phillies at the pick'em price in this matchup.
