Analysis

Ranger Suárez is enjoying a fantastic start to the 2024 season, but there will certainly be some regression on the horizon. Through four starts, Suarez is boasting career-best numbers in average exit velocity, expected batting average allowed, weighted on-base average, hard-hit rate, strikeout rate and walk rate. In 26.0 innings, Suarez has a 28.4-percent strikeout rate this season compared to 19.5-percent in 2022 and 22.0-percent in 2023. That is a healthy jump, and one that is unlikely to stay that high. Including last year's playoffs, Suarez has made 30 starts since the beginning of last season. He's stayed below 5.5 strikeouts in 18 of those 30 starts (60-percent). So we're getting plus-money tonight on something that's happened 60-percent of the time over the last two seasons. Suarez threw 112 pitches in a shut-out win over Colorado in his last start. How deep are the Phillies going to let him go on Monday? Aaron Nola threw 8.0 innings in yesterday's win over the White Sox, so Philadelphia's bullpen is completely rested and ready for the start of this series. Suarez missed the first six weeks of the season last year with forearm and elbow issues. After throwing 21.0 innings in his last three starts, we'd be surprised if the Phillies let him go deep into tonight's contest.
