So, a great ball-striker that isn’t great with the flatstick. Oh yea, that’s the betting favorite Scottie Scheffler. Well, the next player that comes to mind is Zalatoris who was listed at less than 20-1 to win just one year ago.
This will be Willy Z’s 3rd start at August National. He finished Runner-up in his debut in 2021 and then following that up with a T6 in 2022. He withdrew before last year’s tournament to undergo season-ending back surgery but has returned with a couple of solid results this year.
His last two starts haven’t been good, finishing T74 at the Houston Open and missing the cut at THE PLAYERS, but prior to that he had finished T4 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T2 at the Genesis Invitational.
His ball-striking has returned as he has gained strokes on Approach in six straight starts though he lost strokes putting in each of this last two which explains his poor finishes. But he seems to play Augusta’s greens well gaining an average of +1.43 SG Putting in eight rounds at The Masters.
If he is comfortable once again on the greens, he will be in the mix on Sunday.
