The Travelers Championship Course & Field

Only 70 miles away from The Country Club where last week’s US Open was held, the PGA Tour sets its sights on TPC River Highlands for this week’s stop. Another par-70, the course is not long as it doesn’t even reach 6,900 yards at its longest, yet distance off the tee is a major advantage here because you can miss the fairway and still have a good look into the green.

Most of the greens are raised or crowned so you will see plenty of times where the ball will run off and force the players to use their short game to get them out of trouble. Point and case was last year Harris English was T2 in scrambling for the week.

The course should play rather easy so making birdies in bunches will be vital. I doubt we see scores into the 20-under-par range, but high-teens are likely.

The weather for the week looks good except the tournament is likely to get underway in wet and soft conditions with rain likely Wednesday into Thursday. The rest of the week is in the mid-80s with wind not playing a factor.

Nick’s Betting Favorites

From Nick Borrman: My strategy, as is often the case after a major, is to avoid those that were in serious contention last week and look for guys that didn’t expend a ton of energy on a very difficult track. Although it is hard to look past the top two players in the world in Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, I believe there is better value a little further down the board.

Joaquin Niemann +3500 (DK) | Top-10 +330 (Bet365)
Niemann did play the weekend at the US Open, but he was never really in contention which should keep him a little fresher this week. He is coming off a T3 in his previous start at the Memorial and is on a current run of seven straight made cuts with five of those inside the rop-25.

Niemann is not accurate off the tee ranking No. 141 in driving accuracy, but that is not a big concern this week. However, he does rank No. 31 in distance averaging nearly 308 yards which is much more critical and will give him more short irons into the greens to help set himself up for some birdie chances where he ranks No. 13 this season in birdie average.

Finally, he is a strong putter ranking No. 3 in putting average this season, which measures putts only when on the green in regulation.

Tony Finau +4000 (DK) | Top-10 +400 (DK)
Finau missed the cut last week at the US Open, which is a big reason I like him this week, especially at his current 40-1 price. Tony was weekly fade material the first half of this season as he didn’t finish inside the top-40 in eight starts to the open the season, including four missed cuts. But since the Dell Match Play, he had made seven-straight cuts before last week including two runner-up finishes and a T4.

Over the last six months, Finau ranks No. 14 in this field in Total Strokes Gained at +1.20 per round but as he has been playing much better of late, those numbers jump to +1.92 per round which ranks No. 6 in this field over the last three months.

BEST BET Sungjae Im Top-20 +160 (Bet365)
Sungjae Im is a top-20 machine with 12 finishes inside the top-20 and only seven outside. He is coming off a rare missed cut at the US Open, just his third of the season, but bounced back in his previous two by finishing inside the top-20 in both of his next starts.

Sungjae ranks No. 8 in greens in regulation, No. 5 in Strokes Gained Around the Green, No. 12 in Strokes Gained Off-the-Tee and No. 13 in Total Strokes Gained. He also ranks No. 3 in scrambling this season, which is likely to be a key factor.
