Wyndham Championship Recap

27. That’s really all you have to say about Joohyung “Tom” Kim’s first PGA Tour win. 27. Yes, that’s right, he shot 27 on the front nine in the final round to vault to the top of the leaderboard and never look back.

You could see this one coming for the young 20-year-old’s first PGA Tour win, at least to those that were paying attention. Kim, quietly ranked No. 34 in the world, had been playing very well heading into the final regular season event of the season and we previewed him last week as someone likely to get attention as we had him on our Strokes Gained graphic which we start every article with.

He wasn’t ranked inside the top-10 as nearly two-thirds of PGA Tour winners this season have been, but he did rank No. 20 over the last three months. His last six starts included a T23 at the US Open, a solo 3rd at the Scottish Open and a solo 7th two weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. So once again, let’s see if we can zero in on the winner by previewing the best in the field…

The FedEx St Jude Championship Course & Field

Most of the players in the field have history at this course as it hosted a WGC World Golf Championship event, the FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Now it replaces the Northern Trust (and before that, the Barclays) as the first FedEx Cup event.

The course is a stock par-70 measuring a little over 7,200 yards so not overly long, but still length will certainly be an advantage this week. There are only two par-5s so players will have to try and do their damage on the par-4s and simply avoiding mistakes on the par-3s. Generally, the course rewards true ball strikers, especially elite iron play which so many in this field are.

Speaking of the field, after three-straight weeks of very mediocre fields, we are now set for three-straight weeks of the best as the Tour season ramps up for the playoffs. Of the 125 that qualified this week, only three are not playing. Tommy Fleetwood, Lanto Griffin and Daniel Berger all opted to skip for family reasons or in the case of the latter two, back injuries. No alternates will replace them in the field.

Weather looks very good for the week. There is a change of thunderstorms in the opening round on Thursday, most likely in the afternoon, but after that, the rest of the week looks fantastic with temps around 90 degrees, winds less than 10 mph and no further rain in sight.

Nick’s FedEx St Jude Championship Betting Favorites

From Nick Borrman: While last week saw a winner from outside the top-10 Strokes Gained chart last week, I wouldn’t venture away from it this week. The Wyndham was obviously a much weaker field, and the competition is just too elite this week for that to happen again.

Patrick Cantlay +1800 (Bet365) | Top-10 +210 (Bet365)
It was this time last year that we saw Patrick Cantlay catch fire and win the FedEx Cup by winning both the BMW and Tour Championships. This year looks like he could win another playoff event as he continues to ride very hot form.

Since the Memorial, his last six finishes are T3, T14, T13, T4, T8 and T2 most recently two weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Cantlay has proven over recent years that nobody rides a hot streak better than him.

This year, Cantlay ranks No. 4 in birdie average, No. 5 in scoring average, No. 9 in Strokes Gained putting and No. 7 in Total Strokes Gained. He also has some history here as he’s played the course three times with finishes of T23, T12 and T35.

Justin Thomas +1800 (DK) | Top-10 +210 (Bet365)
Like I said, while not sexy, I’m just not going too far down the list here for my outright plays this week. First, I’ll note that JT has won on this course before winning the 2020 WGC-FedEx St Jude while also having finishes of T12 in 2019 and T26 last year.

His last few starts have been far from impressive though as he really struggled in Scotland. He missed the cut at the Scottish Open and finished T53 at the Open Championship while before that, he finished just T37 at the US Open.

But these can be the best times to jump on an elite guy like JT, when his odds dip just enough to give him a little value. I did the same thing on him at the PGA Championship at +1700 and of course that worked out quite nicely.

For the season though, JT has finished top-10 in half of his starts this season (9-of-18), he ranks No. 5 in Strokes Gained on approach, No. 3 in Strokes Gained tee-to-green and No. 3 in Total Strokes Gained, while also ranking No. 2 in birdie average and No. 5 in scoring average.

BEST BET | Tony Finau +100 over Jon Rahm
Hard to not want to get any money on Finau this week as the Tour’s hottest player coming off back-to-back wins. His tee-to-green game has been fantastic, and he has been rolling the rock as well.

2022 has been nothing short of a disappointment for Rahm. He does have one win which I always joke was basically a Korn Ferry Tour event in a very weak Mexico Open, but besides that has been mediocre at best and has now fallen to No. 6 in the World Golf Rankings.

Rahm’s results in the best field events this year have been very unimpressive as well with a T55 at The Players, T27 at the Masters. T48 at the PGA, T12 at the US Open (his best) and T34 at the Open Championship. While Rahm continues to make cuts, I just don’t see him in true contention come Sunday while I would be very surprised if Finau doesn’t continue his hot run.
