2022 Open Championship PGA Tour Betting Notes

Defending Champ: Collin Morikawa (at Royal St George’s)
Current Favorite(s): Rory McIlroy +900 at DraftKings
TV: Peacock and USA Network on Thursday and Friday; USA and NBC on Saturday and Sunday

Open Championship Players to Fade

Justin Thomas – He’s never had a top-10 at an Open Championship, and was awful at the Scottish Open last week missing the cut by a mile. His finishing position at the Open Championship in years past include 53rd, 11th, 40th and two missed cuts. He needs to finish top-5 to return value, and he’s finished with a missed cut and 37th in his last two tournaments. He’s going to disappoint his bettors this week.

Collin Morikawa – The defending champ is priced as a top-5 guy this week, but I don’t think this sets up well for him this week. He has two top-25 finishes in his last ten tournaments, and those were at The Masters and The US Open…two tough courses with tough conditions. The conditions this week aren’t difficult, it should be low scoring. I don’t think he can go that low. He missed the cut last week, and he’s -0.13 strokes gained putting the last three months.

Jon Rahm – He’s finished 27th at The Masters, 48th PGA Championship, 12th at The US Open…55th last week at The Scottish Open. Since February he has one finish better than 10th, that was a win at the Mexico Open in one of the weakest fields of the year. He’s played this course one time, he missed the cut, and with calm conditions this week and wide fairways this tournament could turn into…a putting contest. What does Jon Rahm hate? Putting contests.

Stat of the week…in the field this week, taking players from the European and PGA Tour…Since May 2…95 of them have as many or more top-10 finishes as Jon Rahm

Sadom Kaewkanjana – The last three months he’s -3.12 strokes gained tee to green…-2.47 strokes gained around the green…but he’s best in the field this week as he’s +2.09 strokes gained putting.

Open Championship Draftkings Darlings

Li Haotong ($6900) – Loves playing this course as he’s played here three times and finished 14th, 23rd, and 5th. He’s made the cut in 9 out of 10 tournaments including a win at the BMW International.

Danny Willett ($7000) – Williet won the last tournament at this course, and plays well at Open Championships as he’s made the cut in Open Championships in 7 out of 8 years including three straight top 33 finishes.

Ryan Fox ($7100) – Fox has made the cut the last three times he’s played this course, and he’s coming into this week with 9 made cuts in his last 10 tournaments, and he’s made the cut in three straight Open Championships.

Xander Schauffele ($9900) – Hottest golfer on the planet right now winning his last two tournaments, never missed the cut at The Open Championship.

Matthew Fitzpatrick ($9700) – Second hottest golfer on the planet right now winning the US Open, and has five top 10 finishes in his last six tournaments.

Shane Lowry ($9300) – Seven top 25 finishes in his last eight times playing this course, former Open Championship winner, and has two top 10 finishes in his last three tournaments.

Open Championship Best Bet

Joaquin Niemann over Viktor Hovland

We’ve been fading Hovland for a few tournaments (with much success) and I’ll do it again this week with Niemann. The fade on Hovland is just how lackluster he’s been since The Masters. He has no finishes inside the top 20 since then, and has finished outside the top 40 in three out of the four tournaments since then.

These two have played in four tournaments together since then, and Niemann is 4-0 head to head. The stats are also bad for Hovland. He’s +0.26 total strokes gained which is outside the top 70 for tournament. Niemann is 23rd best in this field as he’s +1.33 total strokes gained in that same time span.

Hovland has missed the cut the last two tournaments he’s played in while Niemann only has one missed cut since March. Niemann has five top 25 finishes in his last seven tournaments, he’s the pick in this matchup.
