Texas Tech vs Oklahoma State Predictions

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders +10 vs Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • Total: 56.5 Points
  • Oklahoma State has covered the spread in each of the Cowboys’ last eight games, and is 6-0 ATS on the road.

Oklahoma State’s aim this week is to avoid all bedlam before Bedlam.

Texas Tech comes off an upset of Iowa State on the same day that Oklahoma went down at Baylor and Kansas stunned Texas in Austin. The Cowboys have been able to avoid chaos this season, winning all five times it has been favored in Big 12 play.

Their only loss came via a 24-21 result on Oct. 23 as a 7-point underdog at Iowa State, so they’ve covered in eight consecutive contests dating back to a 21-20 win at Boise State that Mike Gundy’s team won as a 3-point road ‘dog. That scare on the Broncos’ famed “smurf turf” came the week after nearly losing to Tulsa. Oklahoma State has come a long way over the past few months and is succeeding in a manner typically not associated with their mullet-wearing, let-it-ride head coach of 17 years. Catering to his strengths, Gundy is running the football and trusting his defense, which has certainly proven to be wise. Oklahoma State ranks among the nation’s top five in total defense, sacks, tackles for loss and third down defense.

The Cowboys are closing in on a berth in their first Big 12 Championship game ever, coming off an impressive 63-17 rout of TCU to improve to 6-1 in league play. They control their destiny with a home date against Oklahoma on deck next week and have to resist the urge to get caught looking ahead.

“Same old, same old,” Gundy told the Tulsa World of his plans to get this team ready for Texas Tech. “We need to have a good week of practice and makes rue we’re focused and understand what got us to this point and what we need to do moving forward.”

It may help that the Red Raiders just put an impressive performance on tape in stunning the Cyclones on a 62-yard field goal by Jonathan Garibay, gaining bowl eligibility with an upset as an 11.5-point underdog. The pressure is now off Tech, which fired Matt Wells and will move on to Baylor associate head coach Joey McGuire at season’s end.

Offensive coordinator and former QB Sonny Cumbie will close out the season in his interim role and should have no problem getting Tech motivated to play spoiler in their final home game. Cumbie has adopted the pump jack as the team gimmick, embracing that mentality and really getting players to buy in as the hope in Lubbock is he’ll be retained to run the offense for McGuire, a defensive coach whose biggest asset lies in recruiting.

Redshirt freshman Donovan Smith was impressive as Texas Tech’s new starter, providing a dynamic dual threat option despite his lack of experience. Henry Colombi was starting but fell ill and gave Smith his shot and it’s now unlikely he’ll get his job back unless there’s another injury. With Tyler Shough done the rest of the way, it’s Smith’s show now and he has excellent weapons around him in RB SaRodorick Thompson and receivers Erik Ezukanma and Myles Price.

“He’s a big kid that throws it around,” Gundy said of Texas Tech’s new quarterback. “He can run. He’s athletic. He might be 22 pounds…they put him in there and he played well.”

Oklahoma State’s defense hasn’t allowed more than 24 points in any game this season and the offense comes off its highest-scoring output, so Mike Gundy has his team playing their best at the right time heading into Bedlam.

OSU QB Spencer Sanders has thrown for 799 yards and eight touchdowns against just one interception over the last four games. The one concern about the Cowboys is the health status of offensive linemen Danny Godlevske and Josh Sills. Godlevske is the center, and it’s never great to be stuck with a backup at that key position in a road atmosphere.

He exited the TCU win with what looked to be a leg issue, so monitor his availability here before laying points. Smith won’t catch them by surprise, but 10/10.5 is a lot to cover on the road. Oklahoma State has won four of its last five outright prior to squaring off with the Sooners in their rivalry game and should win and cover in Lubbock thanks to a defense that’s likely to get the better of an inexperienced quarterback.
