2026 Auburn Football Preview and Win Total Prediction
The Auburn football program was snake-bitten in 2025 with six losses by one score, including two in overtime. Former South Florida head coach Alex Golesh inherits a program that appears to be knocking on the door of a breakthrough in the SEC if they can get a couple bounces to go their way.

Odds above courtesy of DraftKings as of July 28. The Tigers went 5-7 straight-up, 4-8 against the spread last season. Six of Auburn’s first seven games stayed under the total before a handful of late-season “over” results. War Eagle will open its schedule against Baylor for the second-straight year after beating the Bears by two touchdowns in 2025.

Coach Golesh brings offensive coordinator Joel Gordon along for the trip from Tampa to the SEC, but defensive coordinator DJ Durkin will remain on the staff from the previous Tigers’ regime.

2026 Auburn Football Outlook
Alex Golesh knows the ground rules at Auburn. After all, this was the place that fired a coach (Gene Chizik) just two years after winning a national title. Gus Malzhan, Bryan Harsin and Hugh Freeze, plus interim coaches Cadillac Williams and DJ Durkin, all had the job in the five years previous to the hire of Golesh last November 30.
It might help Golesh that he has some knowledge of the SEC territory, having worked as Josh Heupel’s offensive coordinator at Tennessee in 2021-22 before taking the head coach job at South Florida and reviving the Bulls program the past three seasons.
USF’s recent successes helped push along the construction of a new on-campus stadium and ignited the Tampa community and booster class. It’s worth noting that South Florida is one of only two Group of 6 schools (Memphis the other) to commit to the full $21.3 million school revenue-share threshold for players. For most of these positive developments in Tampa, Golesh can take some credit.
The reintroduction of Golesh back into the SEC wars began just before his hire at Auburn late last autumn, when he was one of several represented by Jimmy Sexton’s agency involved in a merry-go-round of coaches looking to fill various SEC vacancies. Apparently ticketed for Arkansas just after Thanksgiving, Golesh did a quick about-face and took the Auburn job instead while other American coaches in the Sexton orbit landed jobs with the Razorbacks in Fayetteville (Ryan Silverfield via Memphis) and Florida (Jon Sumrall via Tulane).
As noted above, however, Golesh isn’t taking this job on the Plains with his eyes closed. He knows the lay of the land in the SEC.
The Crimson Cloud
That Auburn decided to trust Sexton’s recommendation and not add the usual caveats related to Alabama represent one significant departure from the recent past for the Tigers. More than a few regional insiders believe the Crimson Tide tended to cloud every gridiron decision made at Jordan-Hare for the past several years.
The aforementioned Malzahn, who never approached the successes of his first Auburn team in 2013 that made it to the national title game, likely stayed on the job longer than warranted because of some successes vs. Nick Sabana’s Alabama in 2017 & 2019, on top of the “Kick-6“ thriller over the Tide in the magical 2013 Iron Bowl. Others believe Freeze was hired away from Liberty in 2022 based largely upon a couple of wins his underdog Ole Miss sides scored vs. Saban during Freeze’s tenure in Oxford.
There were also more than a few Auburn backers who believed the main reason the Tigers inked QB Jackson Arnold out of the portal last year was the shock win he engineered over the Tide when he was with Oklahoma in 2024. Though it probably didn’t hurt Golesh’s candidacy that he was party at Tennessee to the Vols’ wild 52-49 win over Bama at Knoxville in 2022, it’s the job he did at USF that got him on the radar with Auburn.
The Missing Piece
Regional observers believe that Golesh has a leg up on what Freeze was trying to accomplish the past three seasons simply because of a better fit at QB. That would be electric Byrum Brown, a versatile playmaker and multi-year starter who has followed Golesh from Tampa, where Brown directed an up-tempo, progressive Bulls offense that scored over 40 points per game (ranking fifth nationally) last fall.
Unlike predecessors Payton Thorne (who could never really direct the offense as Freeze would have liked) or Arnold (who simply fizzled last fall), Brown looks better-equipped to hit the ground running in the same offense he was operating for Golesh at USF. Brown accounted for 4,166 yards and 42 TDs passing and running for the Bulls last year alone, and for good measure, is joined by his OC (Joel Gordon), WR coach (Kodi Burns), and OL coach (Tyler Hudanick) from South Florida.
The 232-lb Brown, also a punishing runner, has viable complements at running back in returnee Jeremiah Cobb (969 yards rushing for the Tigers last fall) and Baylor transfer Bryson Washington, plus some familiar receiving targets who came along from USF in Keshaun Singleton, Chas Nimroad and Jeremiah Koger, who combined for 111 catches and 19 TDs last season with Brown.
With ex-Bull center Cole Best anchoring a transfer-laden offensive line, it’s almost as if Golesh has picked up most of last year’s prolific USF offense and simply brought it with him to Jordan-Hare.
The one Golesh offseason move applauded as much as any other, however, was retaining defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, who stepped in on an interim head coach basis after Freeze walked the plank late last season, but glad to stay on in his coordinator role for the new regime.
One of the more-respected defensive tacticians in the nation, Durkin’s presence represents some continuity from the best aspect of last year’s team, the stop unit, which posted some highly respectable numbers (just 20.7 points and 329 yards per game allowed, ranking 34th and 29th, respectively, in the nation), plus the nation’s 10th-rated rushing defense.
Keeping junior LB Xavier Atkins (84 tackles, 17 for a loss, and 9 sacks a year ago) in the fold was a boon to the platoon, while Ole Miss transfer DE De’Shawn Womack should bolster another disruptive defensive front. There is also experience in the secondary, where nickel-back Sylvester Smith-Reed is appearing on NFL draft boards.
Auburn Win Total Prediction
Though the Freeze years fell short of expectations, it’s worth noting that Auburn was close, especially a year ago when six of its losses came in one-score games (two of those in OT). Another, a bitter 20-10 loss to Georgia in the South’s Oldest Rivalry, was a tad misleading scoreline as the Tigers were a mistaken referee call from having the Bulldogs down 17-0 just before halftime, and the team continued to battle in November for Durkin, narrowly missing vs. Alabama in the Iron Bowl.
The thought is that with the Golesh offense a year ago, Auburn could have turned around several of those bitter defeats. That might be laying too many “what ifs?” on top of one another for the upcoming campaign, but there is real expectation of a more-potent Tiger flight this fall with QB Brown in the cockpit running his familiar go-go Golesh offense.
The opener in Atlanta vs. Baylor looms as a potential launching-pad game for each (and a crucial for under-fire Bears head coach Dave Aranda), especially as the road portion of the Auburn schedule later in the season includes trips to Tennessee, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tuscaloosa.
Given how close the Tigers were last season, however, Auburn shouldn’t be out of any game, and getting to seven wins doesn’t seem an unreasonable ask. Plus, for the first time in many years, Auburn might even be kind of fun to watch! Over 6.5 Wins
