Analysis

The Cubs and Diamondbacks have played a pair of extra inning games to start their series, but Arizona appears to be in much better shape heading into Thursday's rubber match. Chicago's last three games have all been decided by one run, and this is the final game of a nine-game roadtrip for the Cubs. Chicago won't be getting much rest because the Cubs go right into a home series with the Marlins tomorrow. Nearly every member of Chicago's bullpen has logged a heavy workload over the last few days, and that's likely going to present a problem with Jordan Wicks on the mound. Wicks has not made it through the fifth inning in any of his first three starts this season. Wicks was a September call-up for the Cubs and pitched at Chase Field at the end of last season. He allowed three runs on four hits with four walks in 4.1 innings. Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt is still figuring some things out in his second year with the Diamondbacks, but he can eat innings. Dating back to the end of last season, Pfaadt has completed at least 5.0 innings in six of his last seven starts. In 16.2 innings this season, Pfaadt has only allowed three walks while striking out 17. Arizona should get more out of its starting pitcher in this matchup, which should pay dividends over the course of nine innings against a beat-up Cubs' bullpen.
