Cook Out 400 Track: Martinsville Speedway

Martinsville is an iconic half-mile track with almost no banking that will feature tons of bumping and banging, tight passes, yet there will be long stretches of green flag laps when the cars get spread out. It’s a grueling race as the short track requires constant braking and short bursts of speed along with tire and brake management.

Pit stops and adjustments from the crew chief and pit team are essential to success here as the track can change drastically throughout the race, and a bad pit stop at this short track can put a driver back in the crowded pack.

You’ll also see guys trying to start on the inside on restarts. It’s not uncommon for a driver to get stuck on the outside and lose multiple positions.

Cook Out 400 Schedule

Practice will be at 4:35 PM ET on Saturday with Qualifying right after that at 5:20. The race will be Sunday at 3:00 PM ET.

Top Averaging Finishing Positions Last Four Martinsville Races
*I took out the average finishes at the road course and the superspeedways.

  1. Ryan Blaney 3.8
  2. Joey Logano 4.0
  3. Kyle Larson 7.0
  4. Chase Briscoe 7.0
  5. Ross Chastain 9.3

Top Average Finishing Positions (Richmond, Bristol, Phoenix)

  1. Martin Truex Jr. 4.3
  2. Denny Hamlin 4.3
  3. Brad Keselowski 5.0
  4. Christopher Bell 5.7
  5. Chris Buescher 6.0

Cook Out 400 Head-to-Head Prediction

Ross Chastain -120 over Bubba Wallace

Richmond has been the only track that Wallace has finished ahead of Chastain at this year, and it was only by a few spots.

Wallace hasn’t gotten off to a great start this season, and we’re getting a solid price on this I believe because Wallace finished ahead of Chastain both Martinsville races last year, but both finishes were within a couple of spots. I’ll side with the current form of Chastain in this race.

Cook Out 400 Top 10 Pick

Chase Briscoe at +105 has to be a play.

He finished 5th and 4th in both races last year and he has the 4th best average finish here the last four races. He only has two Top 10s this season, but his average finish of 13th at Richmond, Bristol and Phoenix lets me know he’s close to a top 10 on a shorter track, and this could be the week.

Cook Out 400 Manufacturer Winner Prediction

2 units Toyota +110
1 unit Chevy +245

Even though the Fords have the best two average finishes in the last four races, they’ve only won one race here in the last seven. I’ve been doing the same thing for the last couple of races, and I’ll do it one more time here.
