What are weather prediction markets? A comprehensive guide and insights for 2026

      by Tony Brooks

When you live in the same place long enough, you start to have a feel for potential weather changes. Maybe you can sense when a storm is coming. If you're that skilled, why not try out weather prediction markets?

Weather prediction markets are just that. Markets for predicting real-world weather changes. So, if you fancy yourself as a human barometer, or you're just good at using meteorological instruments, then you should head over to one of these markets. This guide will give you pointers on the types of weather prediction markets and on picking the best platforms to visit.

The Top Weather Prediction Market Apps

Pros and cons of trading on weather prediction markets

      Positive Aspects
      • Easy for anyone to understand
      • Trades cost less than $1
      • Many weather prediction markets available
      Negative Aspects
      • Weather can change unexpectedly

      What are weather prediction markets?

Think of it this way: Instead of looking out the window and saying to yourself, "I'm sure it's going to rain tonight," you actually attach a price to it. Yes, precisely. On these markets, you are trading on questions such as:

      • What will be the highest temperature in Dallas today? 97° - 98° (Yes/No) 95° - 96° (Yes/No)
      • What will be the lowest temperature in New York City today? 67° - 68° (Yes/No) 65° - 66° (Yes/No)

From this point, all you have to do is pick the outcome that is most likely to occur, in your opinion. Each contract is priced between $0.01 and $0.99, which is also a sign of market confidence. After the market settles, your winning shares increase to $1 if your prediction is correct. Make the wrong prediction, however, and your shares settle at $0, leaving you with a loss. Easy, right?

      How are the prices decided?

This is another exciting aspect of the weather prediction market. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, the platform does not set prices. Instead, prices are driven by the collective opinion of traders on the site. In simple terms, the way traders react to specific outcomes influences prices.

For instance, if more traders believe the temperature will drop and purchase "Yes" shares, prices will increase. But if fewer traders have confidence in this market, the prices will drop. Consider it a weather app that updates in real time based on traders' opinions.

That said, the trader's confidence is expressed as percentages or probabilities ranging from 1% to 99%. This indicates the likelihood of an event occurring, and prices are also determined from it. So, presuming an outcome has an 80% probability attached, it means a high trader confidence. Share prices will also be $0.80, a level directly influenced by traders' confidence.

As you can see, everything works together to determine share prices.

How to trade on a weather prediction market

Whether you choose to trade on a weather, commodity prediction market, or other types of markets, the first step is to register for an account. Here's how I made this happen on top prediction platforms.

      1. Visit one of the weather prediction markets on our list by clicking the attached banner

      2. Hit the "Register" or "Sign up" button depending on the site

      3. Enter your information and complete the KYC checks

      4. Deposit some funds using any of the payment methods available

      5. Head to the Weather section and pick your preferred event

      6. Purchase "Yes" or "No" shares depending on your preference

      7. Wait for the market to settle or exit early if you are not confident about your selection

      8. Repeat the process as many times as you like

As you can see, it's quite straightforward. In fact, reading the steps takes much longer than registering on a prediction platform.

      Types of weather prediction markets

The weather prediction market goes beyond trading on whether the weather will be hot or cold. Top weather prediction platforms provide markets for almost every weather condition. Here are some of the options I spotted.

Weather prediction market How it works Example
Rain markets Trading on whether it will rain in a specific city during a specific hour, day, or month. This is the option I'd recommend if you want something that settles as fast as the Kalshi 15-minute markets. Will it rain in NYC this month?
Snow markets As the name suggests, you are trading on whether it will snow in a specific city. Will it snow in Minnesota?
Storm market In this case, you are trading on whether there will be a storm or hurricane at a specific point. How many tropical storms will be in Atlanta
Temperature market Will the temperature go higher or below a set level? These are the most common types of markets that are easy to tap into What will be the highest temperature in Dallas today?
Natural disasters These are more complex markets, where you are trading on the magnitude of natural disasters in a specific region. Will there be an 8 magnitude in California before 2027?

Look at it this way. If you are expecting a certain weather condition in your state for a specific period, there's probably been a market created for it on prediction sites.

You'll find more than just weather event contracts

Here's something I found out about top weather prediction markets. You can trade on more than just the weather! Yes, most of these platforms feature numerous markets, including:

      • Sports
      • Cryptocurrencies
      • Technology
      • Elections
      • Culture
      • Entertainment
      • Economics
      • Finance, and more

Of course, the available options depend on the platform you register. But if you pick the right ones, like those I recommend, you'll find just about any real-time event to trade on!

Best weather prediction markets to trade on

Let's face it, the prediction market is starting to gain momentum. That said, you'll find new platforms launching every day, all promising the best experience. However, one thing I've learned from my experience trading on these platforms is that not all of them live up to these promises. Knowing this, here are three of my top weather prediction markets that will surely provide you with a well-rounded experience.

Weather prediction market Weather market coverage Other market categories
Kalshi Excellent Politics, economics, sports, weather, technology, crypto, entertainment, business, and more
Polymarket Excellent Politics, sports, crypto, business, technology, culture, entertainment, science, and more
Crypto.com Good Sports, crypto, politics, entertainment, business, and selected current events

Kalshi: Best weather prediction market overall

      Kalshi

      Kalshi In A Nutshell

      Wagertalk
      4.75 /5

Looking for the best platform when it comes to weather predictions? Then look no further than Kalshi. Why is this, you may wonder? Well, first off, this operator is properly regulated by the CFTC, allowing you to trade from most US states.

Its weather prediction market is also pretty detailed, with coverage of everything from short- to long-term markets, including natural disasters. These are updated daily, so there's always something to trade whenever you visit. As if that's not all. Kalshi also features over 12 markets that cover everything from technology to sports. I was also impressed with the Kalshi elections market, which covers just about everything related to US and international elections.

Polymarket: Weather prediction platform with a solid market variety

      Polymarket

      Polymarket In A Nutshell

      Wagertalk
      4.85 /5

Next up is Polymarket, and it absolutely deserves its spot on my list. If you're looking for weather prediction markets, this is one of the first places I'd check. The market selection is impressive, with contracts covering everything from temperatures and hurricanes to major storms and other weather events. Add in a clean interface, deep liquidity on popular markets, and an active trading community, and it's easy to see why Polymarket has become a favorite among prediction market fans.

But there's more. Tired of exploring the weather prediction section? Then check out the 12+ markets on offer, including finance, sports, culture, and tech. I'd recommend checking out the Polymarket election market as well, as it is one of the more detailed options I've come across.

To keep things exciting, Polymarket offers additional bonuses, including liquidity rewards and a referral offer that pays you for getting your friends to sign up through your unique link.

      Fast Payout - instant

Crypto.com: Solid crypto weather prediction platform

      Crypto.com

      Crypto.com In A Nutshell

      Wagertalk
      4.75 /5

Last on my list is Crypto.com. But don't be swayed by this, though, as it performs just as excellently as the others I've covered. This platform stands out for its crypto market coverage, which is not a surprise since it began as a crypto market. You'll find the opportunity to purchase event contracts on various digital currencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and more. There's also a section with live price updates for various cryptocurrencies, making research a breeze.

Crypto.com also features weather event contracts from time to time, giving you another way to branch out beyond crypto markets. The selection isn't as deep as what you'll find on dedicated prediction market platforms like Kalshi, but it's easy to navigate and covers major weather events when they're available. If you already have a Crypto.com account, it's a handy way to mix weather predictions into your trading without juggling multiple apps.

      Fast Payout - instant

Sponsored by Crypto.com – Not investment advice. Trading prediction markets and crypto involves risk, including potential loss of your stake. Consider your risk tolerance before participating. Crypto.com connects U.S. users to CDNA (regulated by CFTC) for derivatives trading. CDNA membership required. Trading may not be suitable for all—you could lose your entire investment plus fees. Past performance doesn't guarantee future results. This is not a solicitation or recommendation to trade.

How did I pick the best weather prediction platforms?

As I mentioned, the list of weather prediction sites is ever-growing, making it difficult to choose. Fortunately, I spent a lot of time exploring the top options, and here are some of the factors I evaluated while making my picks.

      🛡️ CFTC Regulation

I don't mess around when it comes to platform safety, and neither should you. That's why the first thing I looked for was whether a platform operates through a CFTC-regulated exchange or marketplace. If it doesn't, I'm moving on. Simple as that. CFTC oversight adds an extra layer of confidence by requiring regulated platforms to meet strict standards around market integrity, customer protections, and compliance.

      🌟 Online Reputation

Trading involves making deposits and funding your account with real cash. This means you want a platform that actually has a reputation for paying your profit when due. To verify this, I explored online review sites like Trustpilot to see what other traders had to say about my picks. Those with more positive feedback ranked higher than others, while those with negative feedback did not make it to my list. Let's face it. If a prediction market is known to treat users horribly, your experience won't be any different either.

      📱 User-Friendliness

Nobody wants a platform that makes it extremely difficult to navigate. Life is already difficult as it is, and you don't need a prediction market that amplifies this difficulty. That said, I settled for platforms that took me only a couple of minutes to register. I also prioritized those with well-structured markets that made it easy to find what to trade.

      ☁️ Weather Market Coverage

By now, you probably know that the weather market is extensive. You'll find everything from temperature to natural disasters to trade on. This is why I only opted for platforms that cover these markets in detail. After all, your goal is to trade on the weather market, so why not choose a site that gives you more than enough options?

      🌍 Market Coverage

Let's face it, trading on the same market can quickly become boring. Therefore, it makes sense to settle for a platform that covers a variety of other markets. Some of the options I love to see include sports, politics, cryptocurrencies, and more. You want a market that gives you access to options, so you don't have to begin the search for a new one when you want a change of pace. This is why I settled for prediction markets with 6 or more other options to trade on.

      🎁 Bonuses

Bonuses are not common on trading platforms, but they exist only on reliable sites. This is why I settled for prediction markets that offer great welcome bonuses to at least get you started. Those with more consistent promotions for regular traders also ranked higher on my list than those with less consistent promotions.

      📱 Mobile Accessibility

If you are anything like me, you aren't sitting in one spot all day. You certainly have to move around, whether it is to go to the bank or run an errand. To that end, you want a platform that lets you trade in your favorite markets on your mobile device. After all, you don't want to miss out simply because you were away from home, right?

Tips for trading on a weather prediction site

Predicting the weather must be easy, after all, I only need to look up at the sky and make a guess, and call it a day, right? No, totally wrong! Many traders have gone into weather prediction markets with this mindset, only to see their contracts settle at $0. Fortunately, this does not have to be your experience if you follow these strategies:

      • Use multiple weather forecast apps to make your analysis
      • Only predict the weather in states or locations you actually know. You have more insights here, compared to areas you've never visited
      • Take note of current weather forecasts, as the weather is unpredictable and can change in minutes
      • Don't trade on gut feeling. While it may seem tempting, going with facts will offer you better outcomes

Conclusion: Should you trade on weather prediction markets?

Look at it this way: should you put your knowledge of the weather to good use and make a profit from it if you have the opportunity to? If you are like me, the answer is yes. Weather prediction platforms like those I've covered in this guide give you a chance to make a profit from everyday forecasts. Instead of glancing at the sky and guessing the outcome, you can head to a prediction market and trade real-world outcomes like snow, temperature changes, and even storms!

What makes it even more exciting is that you only need to purchase "Yes" or "No" shares for less than $1 each. If your prediction is correct, your share value rises to $1. Yes, it's that simple! Remember that you get the best experience by using a prediction market like those I've recommended.

      Weather prediction markets FAQs

Is there a regulatory body for platforms that offer weather prediction markets?

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is responsible for regulating prediction market platforms. The regulator ensures that all events are verifiable and in the public's best interests, while also preventing actions that could lead to market manipulation or an undue advantage to any specific group of individuals.

Is there a possibility of a weather prediction event getting canceled?

This is possible, but it doesn't occur very often. Some individuals worry about this due to market manipulation and equipment tampering, which often affect the settlement outcomes of certain weather events. To address issues like equipment tampering, most prediction market sites typically select a different, trustworthy data source to verify the event outcome rather than canceling.

Are trades on weather prediction markets risk-free?

No, all trades carry the risk of losing the money spent on purchasing contracts. Prediction market trading involves using actual money, and the outcomes of various weather events often change due to factors beyond control. Random weather changes affect market volatility, which increases the risk of financial loss in these markets.
